Re: Wordle
You can also goodle Today's wordle hint and maybe get it without actually giving up and getting the answer if you were at a point where you were stumped but were willing to work on it a bit more. There are places that will give you hints without giving you the answser. I googled all this stuff when I was trying to figure out how my sister who was the least likely to be able to guess some of them was getting it with the fewest guesses in the family, lol. Then she told my other sister what she had been doing.

Re: Wordle
@karstopography I wrote about this before. When you are faced with multiple options with only one letter remaining, rather than guess which one it is on remaining goes. List out all the possible words. Then try and find the biggest word you can using the missing letter from each of you words. So instead of using 1 go to see if it is the correct letter, you might eliminate 2,3 o r more in that one go, instead of relying on luck on subsequent goes to hit on the right one.
It does mean you effectively "throw" a go, but better to try and secure the result rather than trust luck.
Now, you can sometimes be faced with this situation with two missing letters. You can list out all the words, and instead of trying to guess the wordle, try to eliminate as many of the "possible" missing letters by guessing another word which contains the most combinations of the missing letters. Sometimes understanding frequency of commonly used two letter combinations helps a bit here such as "ch" or "st" etc. In you elimination process, i.e. Instead of wasting two letters by using the common two letter combination, use only one of them and use another of your possible letters in the throw away word.
Very very rarely this technique can work with three missing letters, it's rare because the odds are really against you. Some people naturally do this when they guess the first word, and even though they have got a letter of two, they choose a completely different word to try to get a few more letters rather than trying to guess the word with the letters they have found. It does mean you are unlikely to get it in two or three goes but at least you might have a better chance in securing it in four or five go's.
Now all said and done. We still get people getting it in one, two or three goes as they get a lucky break on their first go. Which goes to show, that there is a lot more chance than you might think of getting it right with a guess. I think that is because you haven't really got 5 chances of hitting the right letter out of 26 combinations. As the English language does not have that many five letters words using every possible combination of every 26 letters and wordle is also a list with a restricted word list anyway. So perception of odds may seem high but it is much lower. Also, the real common luck is not actually guessing the real word in the early stages but actually getting a good smattering of letters in the first one or two goes that narrow down the subsequent selection. This is a different set of chances compared to the chances at the end game where you are trying to narrow down the last letter but the process of elimination of the most potential letters in a go still applies.
Through my own empirical studies of this dastardly game, I have also found that having two coffees in the morning before attempting this puzzle also seems to help the odds, quite the opposite to the glasses of wine consumed when it I tackle it in the evening....

Re: Wordle
@Amateurinawe Thank you for the fine and thorough study on Wordle. I did see the section about coffee and that might be key. I generally do my wordle attempts when I reach for the Ipad on the nightstand during my fits of insomnia. Coffee at that point is just an idea that wonβt see fruition until hours later. It is in fact now hours later and Iβve yet to have my morning cup. The dog Tate by my side isnβt quite ready to get out of bed, though, and based on the sounds coming from my bride she isnβt either.

To me, one of the most unhelpful hints is getting the E as a next to the last letter. Didn't use it on purpose in the 2nd line just trying to shake out a larger range of possible letters.
