Project Fishing Rod Holder.
Don't know exactly where to put this because it involves so many processes but here it is.
Been putting this off for some time but I am overwhelmed with fishing rods.
My first step is to cut off some 1 1/2 PVC to 6 inches with the table saw.
The PVC is a wee bit to large to put in a hole I am making in wood with a Forstner bit.
A Forstner bit is a large wood bit that cuts flat bottomed holes.
So anyway I need to make the end of the PVC a little smaller not much just a shave.
Maybe 5 thousands or so.
This way I can force fit the pipe into the hole without any other things like glue or screws.
What other machine is better fit for this than the engine lathe.
After testing I got the machine set up and zeroed.
What you will see in the first picture is the setup.
I have the lathe running in reverse with a threading boring bar mounted on it.
A boring bar is the tool you use to cut inside not outside but you can cut outside.
Doesn't really matter in many cases and in this situation good choice.
Mostly because this is what I was doing last and there is no real need to change the setup.
I just run the tool holder up to the end of the pipe and hit the self feed lever.
The machine is in reverse and the tool just runs off the end of the pipe and your done.
You could do this from the front and running forward but as I said it was already set up this way so it will stay this way.
Some of us that have modern lathes think outside the box.

Here is the lathe setup.
Got about 40 of these to make.
You can see the wee amount that needs to be cut off.

Here's some scrap I'm testing with.
Need to take measurements and drill the holes in the wood I'm going to use.

Re: Project Fishing Rod Holder.
Got the first one finished and waiting for phone to charge so I can take pictuer ans post.
Still pondering on how I want to secure it.
I have several ideas and all will work as well as the other.
The 4 inch center spacing worked out wonderfully for the rods and reels.
The only black sheep of the family is my Penn Fathom 25 left handed reel.
Got it on sale for $100 off regular price of around $200.
It had to go on the end.
I was so sick and tired of untangling stacked up reels to go fishing it was driving me nuts.
Then there was the occasional domino effect right as I was going to bed of bumping one rod and the whole pile falling on the floor.
Even Smokey my cat avoided them so they wouldn't fall.
Scared the devil out of her.

Rod holder phase I.
Decided to put all the bait casting reels in one section.
Spinning reels will go in another one except for the few on the end.

Re: Project Fishing Rod Holder.
Thank you sir.
I decided to just toenail two screws into the floor plate in the wall, took less than 5 minutes.
It isn't like it has to with-stand a wild gorilla attack.
By the way when I first got married my new wife let me store a minnow seine on the ceiling of the living room.
Motorcycle parked in front of the couch.
And years later a small gunsmiths shop in a spare bedroom.
Then some time after that she insisted I keep a TIG/Stick welding machine in the house.
Seems like every time I do something aground here it reminds me of her.

Re: Project Fishing Rod Holder.
I have a question the 2X4 I used to make the holder is from a free stack of lumber I picked up that I have valued in the many thousands of dollars.
Over three grand in Brazilian mahogany alone.
My question, 'Is this california red wood or true western cedar it has no smell but has been in a barn for estimated 50 years?
The color is washed out and darker and redder than the pictuer.

Worth, I mentioned to a friend one day about my brother who had been killed in an accident years ago. I told her it had been 10 years since he had died and I started to say "we can't start. Jay's not here yet" HOW could I forget he had died for a moment?... it was Christmas. I tear up everytime I remember this. he was my next in line sibling 2 years older than me. My friend kindly told me... You didn't forget him, you remembered him. you will never forget him.worth1 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 6:33 pm Thank you sir.![]()

so, Worth... Cherish your memories. they are important.
your picture finally loaded. I love that. I showed it to Kevin. Told home we needed to keep this in mind as I know fishing is important to him and I didn't want to have to kill him over a mess of messy fishing poles....when we finally get our house finished in Zapata.... this would work in the garage.

I have started to remember nothing but good stuff for the most part now.
The next holder will have an improvement.
The table on my press tilts.
Will experiment on a back angle of maybe 5 degrees.
This will keep the rods tilting towards the wall.

I stumbled across this one the other day. It looks like something even I could make. It's made with pool noodles.

Re: Project Fishing Rod Holder.
Im occupying my mind on how to make economicalthings.
Some people make the whole thing out of PVC fittings.
Not only is it not cost effective it is a total pain to make.
Fittings in the larger sizes can get expensive.
Going to make the other one this weekend.
Will take exact measurements and see if putting them in the freezer will shrink them enough to put them in the holes without turning on the lathe.

Worth.. on the economical end... find someone who does excavating and ask for their scraps. trust me we have oodles of short pieces that are virtually worthless but keep a few around just in case they are needed somewhere. On occasion I am in the back measuring pieces for a repair and hauling them to a jobsite for the men.

It isn't the pipe that costs so much money it is the fittings.Clkeiper wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2020 6:24 am Worth.. on the economical end... find someone who does excavating and ask for their scraps. trust me we have oodles of short pieces that are virtually worthless but keep a few around just in case they are needed somewhere. They are close to a dollar a piece.
That's why I did what I did.
Plus it looks better than a bunch of glued up fittings.

Re: Project Fishing Rod Holder.
Got the second board drilled out and ready.
Decided to not drill at an angle, came up with a more simple idea.
Just shim the front edge of the board.
