I have yet to test out that higher than a cats back AVET lever drag reel I bought.
Waiting for the next heavy rain to come along for spillway fishing.
That giant gar and I have an appointment.
I'll turn him lose after the catch.

Caught this little guy & had a bigger one get off at the bank yesterday evening. For those of you who have never caught/ate Sauger, they are real close to a Walleye.

I've caught Sauger in the St Croix river just north of where is flows into the Mississippi. That was years ago. Now days I do all of my fishing in a single Missouri reservoir. Last year wasn't a good year as the lake was 20' above normal pool most of the summer due to flooding rains. We did manage to catch a lot of Crappie during the spawn in April before the floods and also did pretty well on White Bass in the fall after the lake level finally went down.

We had 57 Degree weather here in the Ohio valley today so I tried my luck at a local watering hole.
1st crappie of 2020 & many more to come hopefully.

to go catch some of our local yabbies, which are very nice to eat, I only have to walk over to the "pond" and throw in the net. Actually must try the old meat on a rope trick with the kids later, they will love it. The bigger on in the photo would be around 6 inches long and about the smallest i like to keep for eating out of our pond. Do not know where they came from, but are glad they are there. Pond was cleaned out dry in 2010 or 2011.

I bet they were in the ground all the time the pondwas dry.
I don't see them here but where I used to live we had crawdad holes everywhere.

Considering that the pond was dry for a couple of months at this time of the year, which is when they are active and was considerably deepened, it is far more likely that eggs or young were washed into the pond via the surface drains that exist around us. These drains are the main way the pond fills every year, with the water coming off the hills behind us, which are known to hold yabby populations

For those that are stoved up in the house due to cold winter weather I thought I would torture y'all a bit.
I have one of these reels MXJ/MC and I have to say it is top of the line.
And these people are big time great to order from.

When we lived in Columbus OH at a couple of the dams we could fish for Saugeye, which are a Sauger/Walleye cross. Good eating too. Although not quite as good as Walleye out of Lake Erie in the spring.

I love fishing and dont go often enough.
I have hunted too but it isn't the same for me.
Was raised on properties that had creeks and ponds to fish in.
Then there was the bigger creek we would go wade fishing in that ran for miles.
There was a Vietnam veteran that was the only person I allowed to go fishing on our place.
He would go in sub freezing weather.
That was back in the mid 70's and I still remember his name.
We went through vocational carpentry school together.

We went out on Lake Erie on a walleye fishing charter boat several times. One time, I caught a nice-sized perch. The captain was getting ready to toss it back and I asked him if that was a legal keeping size. He looked a little surprised but said "yes." So I said at $8.99 a pound at the grocery store why would I want to NOT keep it!

Mom would get mad when dad brought in a mess of perch. Too many bones to fry them up so she would make delicious soup from them.

Lake Erie perch are thankfully big enough to fillet. And mighty tasty eating!

The fish lived I dont eat large mouth bass and it looked like it was full of eggs too.
The wind was howling and we went home after 1:30 or so.
There was a tiny over loaded flat bottomed boat that got swamped and capsized with three people in it.
They were rescued and my buddy and I helped them drag the boat ashore.
Caught the fish on a Penn live liner 40 mounted on an Ugly Stik 8 foot catfish rod.
Shrimp as bait bottom fishing for big cats.
Not much of a fight.

We don't eat bass either. Now if someone offered me a nice chunk of Northern Pike I'd grab it real quick! There are really only a few kinds of fish I like. But bass are sure fun to catch!

Northern Pike is great but not too many people know how to de-bone properly....
