Hello Everyone. I'm a gardener interested in tomatos. I have gardened and grown tomatos for decades. I remember the first time I grew some "different" tomato varieties. I was used to Beefsteak, Early Girl and Roma. Then a friend gave me some seedlings of different tomato varieties. When they developed ripe fruit, I was shocked at the appearance and the taste blew me away. I used to depend on garden magazines to give me information about new and old varieties. The internet made things much easier. Every year I search for reviews and try to find the seeds of the ones that are highly rated. I am looking forward to learning more about tomatos!

Welcome to the Junction @Idaho_GardenGirl ! There is a whole big wide world of tomatoes out there for you to try. Reviews are helpful to a point but remember that everyone's taste buds are different from yours and tomatoes taste differently grown in different soils and climates. Try to find a review of a tomato made by someone that lives close to you.

You may want to take a look at the Mostly Mystery Mater Mailing (MMMM). It's a big swap where you can get many many different tomato varieties to try.

You're the first gardener from SW Idaho I've found in a long time. That's where I'm from. It's great to have you.

Anyway, what's your soil type, and how do you garden? If Beefsteak does well for you, I'm guessing your variables are different than mine, though; in our garden, it tends to be undresized, with dull skin. Early Girl F1 and Roma do well, though. I grow a lot of kinds of tomatoes, but we used to grow Early Girl F1 and Roma a lot. This year I'm not doing as many kinds as usual, though (just Brandywine Pink, Caya, and a whole bunch of volunteers). Caya is a tomato I'm selectively breeding from an incidental cross that took in 2016. It's a productive indeterminate PL large yellow round cherry. I don't know if all Brandywine Pinks are this way (from what I hear it doesn't sound like it), but my particular version of it seems to be quite heat-tolerant, and it seems to resist all our viruses. It's very productive, and tolerates a high salt index.

Two (2) words of caution...I mean advice going forward:

1) Yer problem won't be discovering new varieties, but limiting the number you'll be...um...encouraged to try.
2) Do yerself a favor and proactively expand yer planting space STAT, it'll save you's time going forward!
