Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
I had not specifically planned to grow Ukrainian varieties, but it is a testament to the great varieties and breeding work that has happened there that they just happen to already be on my list. I'll try to save seeds from all of these and contribute them in the fall.

Hi Sue!Sue_CT wrote: ↑Sat Mar 12, 2022 8:03 pm If anyone has seeds that are not commercially available to a known Ukranian Heirloom that you would like help preserving seeds from, please let me know I have room to add a plant or two. I have ordered Ukranian Heart seeds but since they are commercially available it is more of a tribute that any real need to preserve the seeds for the future.

Kobzar Tarasenko= Mid-season variety (110-120 days). Determinate, bush tomato grows up to 50-70 cm (20-28 in.) height. Oval-shaped, red fruits, weight 50-80g (1.7-2.8 oz.) with an excellent taste. Variety is resistant to late blight.

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Most people do use plastic but coin is fine too. As Tormato pointed out, the main point is that they are dry before you package seeds. The issue with coin envelopes is the postage when I am trying to keep costs down. Use what you have though because the seeds are what countWoodSprite wrote: ↑Sun Mar 13, 2022 6:02 am
QUESTION: Are coin envelopes OK for this swap or are plastic zip-top bags preferred/required? I personally use coin envelops and have them on hand but can buy plastic bags if needed. Thanks.

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Great questions!Sue_CT wrote: ↑Sun Mar 13, 2022 5:00 pm Is there some required number of seeds or packets we need to send? I believe Ukranian Heart is not highly productive because it was a little late for my area. What is going to happen with the seeds we send? Never really asked any specific questions about this. When I tried growing out ML seeds for Edie it didn't go very well and I didn't end up with much for some reason.
Every seed that comes in the door will go out to those who request seeds. The goal is especially to bring the many lesser circulated varieties into the mix of the world. I also have posted the swap on Instagram and have someone from as far as Latvia participating!
Many are participating with growing the better known Black Krim, Black from Tula etc. This is fantastic. However, If you are growing a less common variety, the goal would be to create as many pkgs (with perhaps only 5 seeds in each) as possible. The goal is to have as many of these varieties as possible put back out in the world to raise awareness and get them grown!
So, essentially there is no suggested number of packages to send in. It all depends if you have a seedy tomato or not, and certainly about how growing goes for all of us this year. Mother Nature has a say here and things happen...as we all understand.
Grow with the best of intentions in solidarity, talk about these varieties and why you are growing them to the public, and do what you can to make the Tribute a success. That's all that's really required

Please count me in for growing out the additional varieties of Nikitova seeds! It must have been fate that I started seeds a month later than usual!!
I'll come back and edit this post with the varieties from the 3/7 list that just germinated. Some are being slow pokes
.
Sending a PM.

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Yes, thanks for the questions, and for the answers. From this thread I discovered that 14 varieties I had already planned to grow were of Ukrainian origin. Since I sell seedlings, I have decided to group these varieties together at market and start more of them, and offer them separately at market, donating all proceeds from the sales of these varieties to the fundraiser of a baker friend from Poland (The Polish Princess) to help with Ukrainian refugees in Poland. Just another small offshoot of the benefits springing from the efforts and information coming through this thread.

Ukranka germinated via Deno method. One seed from 3 started were viable.

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Great work Lisa!
Hey I have some news regarding UKRAINE that Lee from J&L Gardens had posted.
He had received an emailmfrom Ruslan Dukhov.
Duhkov is one of the important breeders from Ukraine. He also was reported to have one of the most diverse and rare collection of plants in Ukraine.
Evidently his greenhouse has been destroyed.
Let's pray for his and his family's safety.
I have 2 of his seeds currently growing- a red heart-Evgenia which I woke up from 2011 and Nickolay Dukhov. Evgenia is named for his wife and Nicolay is named for his late father.
If anyone else hears news of our tomato friends over there please do post!

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Rare Seeds and Seed Savers list Diamond Eggplant as being collected from Ukraine in 1993.
I have grown this before and started the seeds for culinary use from another source back in January. The eggplant plants were prolific . Not likely that they will ripen sufficiently to save for my contribution to this project, but a nice addition to my tribute garden.

novas.zakav.ua sees to list it as Ukraine Their store address is in KyivOhioGardener wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 10:31 pmThis Ukrainian source claims it's a Polish selection: http://nashagradka.com.ua/uk/product/bu ... t-10-gram/
I think some of the tomatoes on the long list are also not Ukrainian. Still worth growing out though, especially if they come from Nikitovka. I've been reading where their town is in the direct path of the invasion near Kyiv and the situation isn't good at all. I hope they've made it to safety and that their business isn't permanently affected.

It could also be that Ukraine is the seed rather than where it was developed, but who knows. I lean toward Polish though because Opole is a city in Poland with Opolskie/Opolsky/Opolskaya (fem), etc. all being transliterations of the adjective form on the city name.greenthumbomaha wrote: ↑Thu Mar 24, 2022 10:52 pmnovas.zakav.ua sees to list it as Ukraine Their store address is in KyivOhioGardener wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 10:31 pmThis Ukrainian source claims it's a Polish selection: http://nashagradka.com.ua/uk/product/bu ... t-10-gram/

You've reminded me to look through my bean collection. I wonder if I still have Ukrainian Comrades, a bush bean that produces 2 colors of seeds, black and sort of a golden tan. The 2 colors appear to be the reason for the naming of the variety.OhioGardener wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 7:48 pm I ordered two pole beans out of Seed Saver's seed bank to add to my grow-outs:

I know you sent me 3 small beans (1 color only) of Ukrainian Comrades in the previous Mmmm swap. I hope you still have some left also. I just potted them up hoping to get them started indoors, but I'm unsure how many I'll get germinated or if both colors will be produced.Tormato wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 7:04 amYou've reminded me to look through my bean collection. When I got down to the last few seeds in the collection, I was left with one color. I fully expect them to produce the two colors, unless a natural cross took place.OhioGardener wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 8:02 pmI know you sent me 3 small beans (1 color only) of Ukrainian Comrades in the previous Mmmm swap. Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
I have some Ukrainian Comrades, about a dozen of each color. i will grow them this year. And I will go back through the list of tomato seeds and see if I have a variety I can grow that hasn't been selected yet.
Edit: I have seeds for Yablochnyi Lipetskiy so will grow this one.
Also have Olimp Malinovyi and Rozovyi Kilogramovyi but when I looked them up (on Google) they seem to be Russian varieties.

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Lipetsk is a city in Russia and the name Yablochnyi Lipetskiy means Lipetsk Apple. I'm finding references that indicate the others are Russian as well and not Ukrainian. That's the problem I have with the current "Ukrainian" list because quite of a few of them definitely are not and were actually developed in the invader's country. I don't have time to look them all up, but if there are specific ones, I can do a Russian language search and often find reference to the seed company or institution that it traces to which is probably a more reliable reference.BettyC-5 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 12, 2022 11:14 pm I have some Ukrainian Comrades, about a dozen of each color. i will grow them this year.
