2022/2023 germinations and off-types

Another not true to type pepper from last year's swap was labeled Habanero Pink (or Pink Habanero). It's much more like a 7-Pot White, and hotter than hell. Good pepper though, lol.

Well, that doesn't sound too good. I sent seeds to someone that wanted a heatless habanero. It was backup seed, because they found some at another source.

My source for Pink Habanero also grew 7-Pot White. Perhaps they crossed?

I received 10 Pale Perfect Purple seeds, which should be PL. Half are coming up PL, half RL. Should I just donate the RL to another gardener? I only have room for 2 of each variety and I'd like to share the seeds for 2024.

I would just grow the PL ones.

I received some Mohamed micro tomato seed but I'm wondering if it really is. The descriptions I've read all have Mohamed about 12" tall or a bit less. The one I'm growing is already 18" x 16" with no buds or blooms yet.

Well, it still shows no signs of buds and I need the space so out it goes. Later in the year I'll start another one and see what happens.

The Mohamed micro I'm growing this year (April 2023) is showing the same problem...It's clearly not a micro, and perhaps it's time to pull the seed from the MMMM list.

I've heard that PPP has exceptional flavor. What would the RL plant(s) produce?

So, my recommendation is to give it to someone local, and explain that you would like one tomato in return, to taste and save seeds.

Just posting a picture of a tomato plant that I got from Renee garden the variety was supposed to be super bush a nice big tomato all I got were cherry tomatoes thie plant stat relivly small but this is clearly a wrong tomato plant maybe a seeds snuck in there for the ride who knows I never complained but I was thinking of starting more from the pack to see what happens

i have just sampled one of them, and the verdict is very good taste. i will save some seeds in the event
i grow it out to see what develops with it or some else wants to take a stab at it keeping in mind that this
is NOT karma peach, and should be considered experimental.

Yes, nicely folded white paper, labelled Mohamed Cherry micro. Probably best to pull the seeds and not disappoint anyone else.

FYI,I had zero germination from Aleppo '20 (Hot Pepper). I had variable, but often excellent germination of other pepper seeds received in trade, all treated the same, with heat mats and grow lights, with bottom watering and constant fans.

Before the next swap, I'll be tossing anything, if I have anything, from 2020, unless I consider it really rare. Three year old seed is about my limit for age on peppers. Since I just picked up a heat mat, I'll look for any Aleppo seeds, and give them a test germination, if I have any.

And a reminder for pepper seed savers, it's best to let a pepper go beyond full maturity on the plant, a smooth pepper getting wrinkly, but not yet moldy. That gives the best chance of fully mature seeds. Cut the pepper in half lengthwise, extract the two half-clumps of seeds, and let them air dry for a few weeks before removing seeds from the clump. Continue drying until they are ready to store.

Has Petite Pois Procoville shell pea (from '21) germinated for anyone? I direct sowed 12 seeds last month but none germinated. Most of the seeds for 5 other pea varieties germinated just fine. I sowed 12 more Petite Pois Procoville today to see if they'll germinate.

I can't remember if they were in a folded white paper or not. If I ever get something like that I usually transfer it to a regular envelope.

Most of the seeds with low germination were older.

Has anyone tried to germinate blue salvia from this winter's MMMM? I sent in seeds from my 2022 plants, but I think the seeds likely are no good. I planted 8 several weeks ago and had zero germination. A friend planted an unknown number, had only one germinate, then it died. This is strange, because the seed from my 2021 plants had great germination and produced beautiful plants last year. Anyway, if you received blue salvia seed from me in this MMMM and planned to try it, plant a lot of seeds and don't expect much. The labels will say "Victoria Blue or Blue Victory" on the packs. I'd appreciate hearing any results.

Yes, this is an important tip for salvia, thanks! I should have put that on my labels. One of the original seed packs said to just press the seeds lightly into the surface of the soil without covering them, so that's how I do it.

Using one 6-cell insert, I planted:
2 cells/4 seeds each with the original Victoria Blue seed (Harris Seed)
2 cells/4 seeds each with the original Blue Victory seed (Botanical Interests)
2 cells/8 seeds each with my own 2022 saved seeds

For germination, I got:
Victoria Blue 5/8
Blue Victory 7/8
Own seeds 0/16 (edited to correct my math, sigh)

Since all the varieties were treated identically, it seems likely that the seeds are the problem. I saved blue salvia seeds two or three times last fall, so it's possible the seeds I sent out for MMMM will be better, but I'm not feeling so hopeful. I'll save new seed this year and do a germination test before passing them on. I didn't think that would be necessary, because the 2021 seed was trouble-free.
