Re: What's on your 2022 tomato growlist?
Less tomatoes and less varieties next year. Grew 42 varieties this, year, 70 in total and only a few will return.
I need 75 day or less varieties, as they need to produce most of their fruit before either Late Blight or frost gets them by mid-Sept. (Have tried resistant varieties, but they are basically a supermarket tomato).
30 Varieties. Thinking about the following. Any input greatly appreciated. Also thinking of participating in the MMMM swap if Canadian entries won’t get stopped by Customs.
Cherries
Sunrise Bumblebee (returning)
Pink Bumblebee (returning)
Sunshine Yellow (returning)
Candy Sweet Icicle (returning)
Sweet Aperatif
Rosella
Gardener’s Sweetheart or Gardener’s Delight ?
Iva’s Red Berry ?
Container:
Boronia (returning)
Dwarf Scarlet Heart (returning)
NBDwarf (returning)
Dwarf Emerald Giant
Wild Fred
Blazing Beauty
Uluru Ochre ?
Whereokwhai ?
Sophies’ Choice
In-Ground:
Oxacan Jewel
Arbuzyni
Grub’s Mystery Green
Kosovo or Sylvan Guamme
Paul Robeson ?
Thornburn’s Terra Cotta
Caspian Pink
Pervaya Lyubov
Lucid Gem ?
Carbon
Woodle Orange or Dr Wyche’s Yellow
Striped Sweetheart Dark

@MissTee, Clear Lake Heirloom is a nice early black beefsteak; I’ve grown it the last 3 years.

Thanks I’ll look this variety up. I didn’t have enough dark tomatoes this year.

I want to try the Chef Choice varieties, I got Chef Choice Orange (2017) as part of last year's MMMM. I am hoping to acquire Chef Choice Pink before seed sowing time.

Re: What's on your 2022 tomato growlist?
There are some Chef's Choice varieties listed in the MMMM Hybrid thread so it looks easy enough for you to get some. Pink is there too. https://www.tomatojunction.com/viewtopi ... 117&t=2801

Miss Tee
I grew Thorburn’s Terracotta for the first time this summer. Probably one of the best tasting and produced all summer. Was reasonably early so could enjoy it for a long period.

Re: What's on your 2022 tomato growlist?
Wish I could decide! Too many options.
Anyone have recommendation for tomatoes that are similar in taste to my current favorites?
Dester
SOTW
Yoders German Pink Oxheart
Cuore di Bue (another pink oxheart)
GGWT
Probably growing 1 green beefsteak (Evergreen, Malachite Box or Aunt Ruby's German Green?), 1 bicolor beefsteak (Virginia Sweets or Thorburns Terra-Cotta?), 1 white/yellow beefsteak (Lillian's Yellow Heirloom, White Tomesol or Hugh's?) and 15 or so pink/red oxheart/beefsteaks. In Ontario zone 6b.

Ones i could recommend are Warren Bees and Pomodoro Cuore Antico di Acqui Terme. Both i grew this season. Both a sweet and flavorful.

Re: What's on your 2022 tomato growlist?
The only one on your list that I haven't grown is Yoders. If it's like a typical heart it's likely sweet and meaty. All of the others I really like, with SOTW as my second all-time favorite, and Dester in the top 10, out of 1,500+ varieties trialed.Toomanymatoes wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 11:40 am Wish I could decide! I generally do not like green tomatoes. Green Giant is the only one I think of highly. White Queen is supposedly the only white with any flavor.
Lillian's Yellow Heirloom is about as good as it gets for a true yellow, but it is quite late. Hugh's, which I like, is mild, sort of like very sweet watered-down lemonade.
Pink beefsteaks and pink or red hearts make up most of my garden.
My first recommendation would be Pervaya Lyubov, a very early pink beefsteak, the earliest great tasting tomato that I know of.

@Tormato
Thanks for the suggestions! Guess I know what will be going on my MMMM want list.
I have seeds for Green Giant, so maybe I will try that one in 2022.
I don't mind late tomatoes, as I usually still get several to try. As long as I can try one, I am happy.

Re: What's on your 2022 tomato growlist?
I can fit in 16 plants and have spent this past week making up my grow list for next year - haven't even pulled all my plants form this year's garden.
My list... *** is new to me 2022.... comments welcome...
Sunsugar
Sunrise Bumblebee (was torn between it and Karma Purple Multiflora) ***
Start S F1
Buffalosteak (hybrid)
Neves Azorean Red (a staple)
Aunt Ginny's Purple
SOTW (a staple)
Dester (was new to me 2021, nice tomato, seems late)
Girl Girl's Weird Thing ***
German Red Strawberry
Anna Maria's ***
Kosovo (a staple)
Polaris *** (this year I had both Cherokee Carbon and Paul Robeson - not sure if I will miss them)
Rozovyi Myod ***
Girthmire's Pride ***
Cour di bue ***
Of course in ordering seed, I couldn't decide so I have potential alternates, these are all unknown to me....
Midnight Sun
Reif Red Heart
German Orange Strawberry
Prue
Curtis Cheek
Reinhard Kraft's Giant Astrakhansky
I had a horrid year in 2021 and decided to switch out a bunch of things. Best plants in years of starting went into the ground then got hit with the oddest conditions in years - it was my toughest in the last 11 years of tracking my tomatoes.

Somewhere a bit south of me, you likely got all of that rain, all summer long.
I'm currently left with one SunGold plant, out of 180 total plants. It still has about 50 green tomatoes on it.

Miss Tee,
From your list, I can recommend Rosella Cherry and Dwarf Wherokowhai. Sweet Aperitif is sweet, although small. You should also try EM Champion for an early, compact, determinate pink heart.
