I think the key with planting from that size is to do so while they are still actively growing and not overly rootbound.

The reason I asked is I know commercial farmers do not repot into 4 inch pot. They go straight into the ground from relatively small cells so was wondering if you did the same.

It seems that for every packet I sent out, I have received about 4 back, with seed also coming from Volvo (always welcome) here plus an offer of an entire collection of tomato seed from someone who has a lot of good paste or drying varieties. I think I either need to extend the extension or more likely move to a strict prune and topping system.

That collection of seed did show up, 104 lots of seed, only a small percentage that I had and some that I wanted. Yipppeeee

Normally do not see the value in going larger under my conditions unless I knew that there would be a delay planting, then I would move them up.

Excavator here today to sort out mounds of soil in vegetable garden extension. 145 meters of lands about 1 meter wide that just need a little bit of finishing to be ready to plant. Timing will work beautifully with tomatoes being hardened off now. Largest tomatoes about 5 inches high and growing very well.

Yes Godawgs, but I will save those 104 for next season, to late for a bulk sowing now, although I will sow one more today.

As indicated above, the Vege garden bed extension had a boost the other day. I have since completed the North wall of the bed, but still need to finish dismantling the wall adjoining the existing bed and complete the south wall, which needs to be easily removable in the short term for delivery of extra soil.

Folks dropped in today to pick up some tomato and capsicum plants, about 40 in total. Didn't make much of a hole in greenhouses which are looking great. While moving plants about I noticed BUDS in one variety. That's only 57 days from sowing! Variety is Little Flame, one breed in Bendigo from Snowy x Jaune Flamee

Ok, just checked parentage, Dwarf Mr Snow x JF, aim of breeder is to produce a dwarf version of JF. Photos to follow shortly.

Have cleaned up the Rhubarb patch lately, plants just starting to grow for the current season so only small. Holes were dug and sheep manure and palletised chook manure added, one seed stalk left on "Champagne Giant". These will be selfings so not sure how much seed will hold. I wont need it if someone is interested. This variety can produce stems of 440 grams/15.5 oz.

There is also a seed stalk forming on "Champion Giant" which will be selfings if seed holds, not as big a stem, 340g/12oz, but a more vigorous grower overall

Considering the wind we have had today, some of the rhubarb seed must have been pollinated for how much is still hanging.

Been busy today, swapping tomato plants with a friend who had been out of growing for a couple of years due to marriage breakup, purchased a second hand tiller (26inch wide) off Mcsee which will make digging new beds over easy and finished off with the delivery of a hive of bees, just as the fruit trees are starting to break out into bloom. One or two trees been out for a week or so, rest just starting to burst buds.

Your new garden is fabulous! I wish you much success with your list-some great varieties there. Keep us updated on Little Flame too. Jaune Flamme is a winner for me and I am a sucker for Dwarfs and Micros.

Never have had a plant flower anywhere near as early as it will this year.

Bees seem to have settled in well enough, observed from a distance only today, will be opened by the owner Monday or Tuesday as weather permits to check as he has lost a couple of hives this year from reasons unclear.

Gave the rotary hoe a run today, needed a couple of tweeks, now good and loosened one of the new beds likely. Two rows of potatoes in that bed, plus another bed planted, around 40 row meters, 150-160 seed tubers in.

Gave the rotary hoe another run on Sunday and planted some carrots and parsnip. Given the weather forecast I covered the seed with hessian to lessen the impact of any rain over the next week.

Took the day off gardening today and went snapper fishing instead with a mate. Limit is for 3 fish over 40 cm/16 inches per person. We had a great day, bagging out in 2 hours
