For years these people have been crying for a grocery store in their community.
HEB decided to sell the land back to the developers.
So no new HEB everyone was wishing for.
And I agree there is an absolute food dessert in the east section of Austin.

Traffic, they got a plenty. Surprised there’s no supermarket nearby. No Wal-mart either? Any of the Mexican meat markets?

That side of Austin over by what was once Bergstrom AFB (now the airport) has been the last to fill out. No hills peppered with tuscan villas on that side of town either.

Everyone wants to be over in the rocky, thin limestone soils west and north side of town. I think I’d prefer the rich Blackland Prairie southeast side.

There isn't much anything in that area and I've been all over it.
The closest HEB is on Montopolis around Riverside.
That area is pretty run down too.
I think there is one HEB off 183 in Austin and it's been there for years.
It pretty run down from what I've read on line.

You can't blame HEB for wanting to make profit and not build in some of these areas.
My problem is they don't have any competition besides Walmart and Walmart isn't competition.
The del Valle area is highly populated with minorities as well.

Lots of that black farmland is being covered up in concrete and blacktop.
Apartment building everywhere.

I bet this is a huge letdown for people in del valle
They were really looking forward to their HEB because I've known a few people from there.
Many were driving to Bastrop to go shopping.
It takes about 20 to 25 minutes to drive to Bastrop from del Valle.
About the same to fight traffic to get to a good HEB in Austin.
HEB definitely builds where the money is much of the time.
At least in Austin.
The one in Bastrop is expanding and getting the real Texas BBQ to boot.
The one in Elgin is run down and no telling what they're going to do with it.
Because Elgin is growing up too.
Nothing in Smithville but Walmart.
But it's about 10 minutes from Bastrop.
Elgin about 20 minutes.
I'm adding La Grange to the list as well because their HEB is tiny and only 35 minutes from Bastrop.
So it's my theory that many people from all around are coming to Bastrop to shop.
The parking lot is packed full all day long.

I'm going to play the little boy in the Emperor's New Clothes..
It's the boxed chicken broth you see in the store especially the no salt stuff.
First where's the gelatin?
How do you make a broth without gelatin?
Second I can't really taste anything.
The stuff pours out like water.
I think it's a con job if you ask me, like those crooked taylor's that made the Emperor's New Clothes.
You're better off buying a few chicken thighs and other scraps and making your own in my opinion.
But like in the story maybe I'm not sophisticated enough to taste the boxed chicken broth.
Maybe it's for the higher classes where us lowly peasants have to make our own. :(

Sometimes I get lucky and find rotisserie chickens clearanced and in the cooler. I pull the meat and use for chicken salad or chicken wraps and freeze the bones until I have enough to make a large vat of broth. Other times I will just put them in the instant pot with veg scraps I saved in the freezer, water, some salt, pepper and garlic and pressure cook it to make a fast homemade broth for a soup. So much better than the store.

I don't buy chicken stock. I get a Costco rotisserie chicken about once a week, take off the meat and into the pot the carcass goes. They are $4.99. You can't get a whole chicken that cheap out of their meat case. Last nights dinner was a nice chicken rice soup and the night before that was chicken mushroom alfredo. If I'm ever in a pinch I will use Better than Bullion.

The rotisserie chickens here at HEB are more expensive than 4.99.
Costco is many miles away.
The regular rotisserie chicken is a little over a dollar more at 6.29.
Pilgrims pride is around 6.89 or something like that.
Sometimes I get the rotisserie chicken and eat half for lunch if the weather isn't hot.
Then the rest comes home with me.

@worth1 It's still so easy to make stock with a any old chicken. Place it in a pot, cover with water. Bring to a boil. Cover it, turn off the heat and let it sit for 45 minutes. The meat will be so tender. Pull it off and them simmer the carcass for at least an hour with whatever spices that you enjoy.

I simmer my bones so long the gristle is tender.
