Possibly the egg mass of the Eastern Tent Caterpillar.

Boy I hope not, haven't looked yet.

I have cleaned thousands of pears over the years...can't recall seeing this? On the ground, initially, I thought it was slug wrapped around the stem. The pear was on the ground less than a day, I pick them up daily.
