Pomodoro Cuore Antico di Acqui Terme: I was concerned when there wasn't any germination when my other varieties germinated so I sowed x1 more seed in a new cell. The next day one of the original seeds germinated (11 days) but the 2nd seed from the first planting never germinated. The single seed from the second sowing finally germinated after 32 days. By then it was I was just days away from planting out so I composted the tiny seedling and planted the older seedling.

Thanks for the detailed info about both varieties! Sounds like I should test my remaining stash of Cuore Antico... seed to see if I have the same issues with germination. I'll try to remember to do that. I'm glad you were able to get one plant of each despite the issues.

Seeds store best when they are dry. Really really dry. I allow mine to dry for a minimum of 2 weeks and a month is even better. Any moisture left in the seed, cuts down on viability.

That's a good reminder, though I think I've done that part correctly. This morning I planted six pots (3 each of Cornue des Andes & Cuore Antico, each from a different tomato) for a germination test. I'll report back. If germination is poor, I'll test some of the other varieties I saved in 2022.

Results are in! On Monday morning, 6/24, I planted 6 Dixie cups of seeds, three each of Cornue des Andes and Cuore Antico... Five of the six cups had 10 seeds each; one cup of Cornue des Andes only had five seeds. Each cup was seeds from a different tomato/date. Planting & care details are below the results.

Cuore Antico:
8/20/22 (MMMM 2022 tomato): 10/10
8/13/22: 8/10
8/27/22: 9/10 (one tricot)

Cornue des Andes:
9/11/22 (MMMM 2022 tomato): 4/5 (didn't have enough seeds left to test 10)
8/4/22: 9/10
8/25/22: 6/10

The Cornue des Andes seeds were slower to germinate by about a day to a day and a half. They may still be germinating at this point; several appeared today.

The 8/25/22 Cornue des Andes cup is the only one that seems like there could be a bit of an issue. If germination doesn't improve beyond 60%, I probably won't send those seeds out to anyone. One of the six is just barely peeking out at this point, so there could be more on the way.

I planted the seeds in ProMix BX Biofungicide & Mycorrhizae, with nothing added except tap water. I put the cups out on a warm, sunny, roofless front step, covered with a piece of newspaper, for about two days until it got too hot out there, and then I brought them back inside. They sat in the dark in my hall for about 24 hours until I decided it was a bit chilly for them in the AC, so I put them under a fluorescent grow light for 24 hours. No heat mat.

The first two seedlings (Cuore) appeared late the evening of 6/27. By the morning of 6/28, maybe 6-8 were up, and then by late last night it was quite a crowd.

So, unfortunately, there's nothing in these results to explain why @WoodSprite got poor/slow germination on the Cuore Antico seeds. Maybe ambient temperature? Or maybe something happened to those seeds in transit? Who knows.

Now the big question is, what do I do with 46 more tomato plants?

Has anyone tried these varieties I’m starting these today for my indoor trial I’ve chosen these based on height for inside and want to see if it would be worth a trial in the garden next year since I’ve decided to scale back on tomato plants because my daughter decided to start gardening and I won’t have to grow as much for the family:)

506 bush I grew several years ago.
It seemed to do okays from what I remember but it's been almost 20 years.
New big dwarf is also good one.

I'm growing New Big Dwarf this fall. How tall did yours get?

@TomatoNut95 mine didn’t no bigger than 2 foot because I had put it in a 5 gallon bucket at the time..it could of done better I’m sure if I knew what I was doing at the time..

That's good, I like my dwarfs 2-3 feet. How about the fruits? We're they beefsteak types? What did they taste like?

And probably a half dozen more that I have forgotten. Plus I was just informed earlier that 6 Big Beef's was not enough. Next year I will be planting 12 and stagger them out over a couple of months. Just tasted the first super ripe Big Beef, it was really really good. The seeds are fermenting now, will add another 5/6 tomatoes to get a good seed mix. We have already pulled more than a hundred tomatoes off the 6 plants ( since 6/7).

You have Pineapple listed as an F2. I'm wondering if that's a typo, as this variety is open pollinated and not a hybrid.

I got the seeds many years ago from someone at Tomatoville. Don't remember who, the package says PineappleF2 with a date of 2014. I try to record everything the same way that I receive it. There's enough confusion now without me unnecessarily adding to it. Dr. Male, were she still alive, could resolve this in no time.

I think Kentucky Cabin, which I love and have grown for many years, is probably Buckeye Yellow. My grandparents grew Buckeye Yellow in the thirties and forties and just called it Old Buckeye. It was one of their main tomatoes along with Dinner Plate, which was a big red heart. People have a tendency to make up names for tomatoes, and maybe even exaggerate a little bit about their tomatoes.

As you can see, this is kind of a sore spot with me. I can somewhat understand a person being proud of their accomplishments but we don't need a thousand different names for basically the same tomato. Right now I am trying to stabilize Big Beef. I've had really good luck, the taste is better and it seems to still be heat tolerant. At F5 now, will go to F10. When I'm done, it will not be Ken's Big Beef or Big Beef+. Still just Big Beef.

Couldn't sleep last night, so though I would prepare a list of tomatoes to plant in 2025. Drug out the suitcase that I keep my seeds in, wound up taking about 3 hours. wound up with 130+ varieties plus multiples of a couple of dozen. Most I will plant is 12 BBF5, staggered over about a month. I am thinking that I will have 170-180 tomatoes in the ground eventually.

Switching to more Dwarfs this year, along with most of the old reliable heirlooms. Plus several of the older saved seeds, some of which I only have a few seeds.

@MissS I found some more Pineapple seeds, these marked F4 with a date of 2016. I assume someone was trying to improve something about them. Don't have a clue, but a couple are going in the ground.

I wonder what it was crossed with? It will be fun for you to select and stabilize it if you like it. You are creating your own variety.
