Snail's tomato garden

For a long time I've grown just a couple random tomatoes mostly due to lack of space. This year I made two new garden beds, cattle panel trellis and have selected many heirloom varieties to grow and try.

I'm trying to get it all organized and near, take notes etc. But so far mistakes have been made on my part, and also on seed/seedlings vendors part. I was trying to go heavy on black and pink types, but it not always worked out.

Zone 6b, Ohio.

My seed we're started on either march 13 or April 3. In the ground or pot on April 28-29.

Here's a couple of varieties from this year.

Zebra Ezel lucked out and got shaded area. But it's still producing nicely!

This one was the first to start blushing for me, and it was supposed to be Not Purple Strawberry. But today I briefly looked at the fruit at home and it looks kind of red, not purple so now I have doubts...

Three varieties Belyi Naliv, Grushovka and Early Wonder (not pic) I selected beacause they were listed as super early, and none of them is early in my hands. I'll see how they taste, but prob will pass next year.

Saucy Mary Dwarf, I don't know if it didn't like something but so far it only has those 3 toms and a couple of tiny ones.

I also grow Firebird sweets! That's a nice, prolific variety that doesn't take up much space. What do you do with all of your tomatoes?

And a couple of cherries and things that we're eating already. I mostly dislike cherries and plant them for earliness and my kid. Or by accident as it happened this year.

Clockwise from the largest: Opalka (we ate the first ripe one yesterday and it was very very sweet, we're hooked!), Norfolk purple, Unknown, KARMA purple multiflora, Prairie fire and Honey drop in the middle.

The round striped one is what I suspect Tigerella. I bought this seedling locally because it was supposed to be Stump of the world. Overlooked that it's regular leaf. 2 lessons learned. At least it's early.

And this one is a funny eggplant, Melanzana rossa di rotonda. It's beautiful and those two are ripe already. I wish I knew what to do with them.

It's my first time with this one and so far it looks loaded! I hope it's tasty.

It's also my first year with so many plants and I don't know what I will do with all them yet (I hope I will have that problem though!). Before this year I was able to eat them, make sauce and share with wildlife, ha!

I'm not big on eggplant but many people here seem to be. One person suggested baba ganoush, and I'm sure there are many other recipes out there.

I'm also not a big fan of cherry tomatoes. I grew Karma purple last year and there were simply more than I could use. Cherries are also a pain to work with when it comes to making stuff. I do like black strawberry, which is a very large cherry tomato. Other than that I grow mostly slicers and a few paste, for canning. And yeah, I share quite a bit with the local wildlife. I've asked the squirrels if they could eat one tomato entirely rather than taking a bite out of several. They didn't seem interested.

@BurgundySnail I grow enough tomatoes to keep us going through the winter, various uses for frozen tomatoes hucked into a ziploc and into the deep freeze. They keep better whole, which is convenient (no extra work). So freezing is a good option if you have the freezer space. We use frozen tomatoes instead of canned in many recipes, and they add richness, depth and sweetness to just about any soup or stew. Not the same as canned, because our tomatoes taste different and better, or so it seems.

@BurgundySnail, I grew that Honey Drop cherry a few years ago. Nice flavor! However I found that the skin got rather thick not long into the season. Have you encountered that? Maybe it was the hot southern sun that caused it. They did produce for a good while though.

My bad! But in my defense it was my phone who suggested it and I was too lazy to retype.

I am drowning in tomatoes. Everything is ripening. Spider mites are rampant this year, I hope some plants survive into the fall.

The disappoinment of the season - Early wonder. Someone on tomatoville said it better than I - not early and not a wonder. Meaty, but kind of tasteless?

Grushovka - new determinate variety for me. I love it. Meaty and tasty. Plant is loaded. A keeper for next year!
