Wow! That's a lot of butternut! I love them too but I can only eat so much squash in one winter; in fact, 2022 I had 13 squashes in storage (not counting the freezer bags) and ended up giving the last few away due to food fatigue. Yours is an incredible crop though.

I store my squashes similarly, but I also wipe with vinegar and give them a light coating of mineral oil. I find they keep quite well that way.

The lovely and long suffering Mrs. Gotch LUVs her Butternut Squarsh...to die for on the grill....not too mention Squarshagna in a Béchamel Sauce...you's got a pan of that & you's don't have to leave the house for a while

Thanks for the helpful tips, will add them to the mix!

I got the idea from this book: https://www.amazon.com/Preserving-Food- ... C91&sr=1-8

If the url doesn't work, it's called Preserving Food without Freezing or Canning: Traditional Techniques Using Salt, Oil, Sugar, Alcohol, Vinegar, Drying, Cold Storage, and Lactic Fermentation. Very interesting read actually.

@JayneR13; with all the family back-n-forth about today's production (viewtopic.php?p=127505#p127505), the lovely and long suffering Mrs. Gotch reminded me about her delicious Butternut Squarsh Mac-n-Cheese, where pureed creamy Squarsh is substituted for part of the cheese.

I cut two (2) Parris Island Romaine heads back on June 20th and left the root balls in the box and, lo-n-behold, they're throwing out new leaves.
thumbnail_IMG_2961.jpg
To further test this method, I did the same with the remaining five (5), two (2) forefront, and the others toward the back.

To any of you's familiar with this method: What did you's know, when did you's know it, and why didn't you's apprise The Gotch...?

They will be small heads, plants throw them out as backup seed heads. Should be just as good as full size, just smaller. Have known about doing this for 50 years, long before the internet.

Yep I've known this for years. They won't yield as well but you still get them to produce more.

yeah, gotch those plants will keep producing for ya on a smaller scale before they start to bolt again.
you can use them to fill the gap until the new recruits start to produce if you succession sow every
coupla weeks or so. i guess we just assumed you knew that, eh.
for the earliest lettuce, let some of your lettuce go to seed this fall. the hardy varieties will winter over, and
sprout when its time to sprout. you might have a carpet of lettuce to deal with in the spring, but you can move
plants to where you want, plant around or simply hoe them down (gasp) if you don't want them where they are at.
older dogs can always learn new tricks.

Ended up on a Croissant, Braunschweiger, Cheese, Parris Island Romaine, & Mayo Samitch....LUV the smell of fresh cut Cuke!

For some reason, the Cukes AND the Zukes are late.

I didn’t know that but I don’t grow my greens that way, due to hungry rabbits & limited space. Old cats can learn new tricks too! Thanks!

I have pepper envy! Mine are tiny and struggling. My squashes are doing well and even setting fruit, which promptly rots. And I know about Stop-Rot! It's a rough year in the shadow of the Frozen Tundra, so I'm glad to see others doing well.
