Potted up my starts from 9 oz red cups to 3.5" square pots. Plants range from 1" to 6" from soil level of the new pots to their tops - with the shortest the late starters. Probably should have waited to pot those up, but now they're all the same size pots and easier to trek in and out without tipping over; as weather permits. I grow in my basement so while I started seed in March, potted up and put under lights, they grow in my uber cool basement. Growth is a bit slower on the top side, but roots jam packed in the cups. They develop nice thick stems in the cool temps, and then start to get tall once I set them outside to harden off.

My overachievers are Cherokee Carbon, Sunsugar, Start F1, Pomodoro Cuore Antico di Acqui Terme (man that's a mouthful!), GGWT, and Start F1 who are all budding.

Goes to show you how resilient tomatoes are... Rosovye Krupnye got tipped over and I did not notice. She received far too much water, being on her side, since I bottom water. Yet she persevered, grew around the tipped over cup and up to the light. Was a bit of a challenge to pot her up, but I did it! Have her marked so I am careful with her when she goes into the ground.

Hello to you all!

Hoping this years better than last year, here's the ones I'm growing. Couldn't remember if Brandywine Pink are the next best Brandywine after the Sudduth strain. Difference from last year will be these will be grown in the ground rather than bags. I might be wrong, but I think ground grown tomatoes have something more than pot grown. Hanging onto my pots just in case, though.

Brandywine Pink (couldn't find Sudduth strain starts)
Marianna's Peace (a favorite)
Goose Creek (a favorite)
Black From Tula (a favorite)
Moskvich (bought from a local Mennonite family)
Black Pineapple (first time trying these)
Boxcar Willie (First time trying these)
Purple Cherry
Sungold

Almost forgot 4 very important ones :O

Hungarian Heart (first time trying these)
Gold Metal (first time trying these)
Black Krim
Opalka

Smacks forehead* Forgot to add, Jet Star, the workhorse of the tomato garden!

@o0sunsi0o That's a great list. The top three are on my favorite list but haven't been grown in some time. I keep growing new to me trying to save the rare ones with great qualities. One year, I will have to grow just my favorites and see how they compare against each other.

I am one that prefers Brandywine from my saved seed over Sudduth's or Cowlick's or any of the other's in the big family.

That's my problem, wanting to grow some new ones, but space is limited and I want my old time favorites there, too. Yes, reevaluating favorites and comparing them is a great idea and it looks like that's what I will get to do this season. I hope you get to do the same and keep us posted, I would love that!

From the Brandywine family the yellow should be on my favorite list, but I made room for "Gold Medal" this year because I hear how people love it and just needed to try it. I've got seeds to try "Brandywine Cowlicks" and want to try that maybe next year. I'm confused if "Brandywine Pink" is actually the Sudduth strain, I need to read up on all these Brandywines.

Hope you have a successful gardening season and lots of great tasting tomatoes, which ones are you looking forward to?

After last year's total fiasco with the herbicide in the purchased compost and loss of tomatoes, here we go on another adventure. This year is a mix of some I do every year, some that were new to me last year but getting a fair re-trial this year and some completely new from this year's MMMM.

Tomatoes with ** after them are completely new to me. Tomatoes with R after them are those new to me last year and getting a re-trial after last year's failure.

All but three of the regular tomatoes were started mid March. The Akers, Old VA and Steak Sandwich were just started along with half of the dwarfs four days ago.

About half of the dwarfs were started the third week of April. Then I started the other half four days ago, trying to insure some late summer tomatoes. Half of them had popped up sometime this morning.

I saw, "Daniel Burson" on your list and researched it just now. Wow, sounds like a tomato I would like growing in my own garden. I had Indian Stripe in my garden for the first time last year, but nothing was the way it should be. The enormous selection you have on your list will be exciting to evaluate the many types and colors!

Just looking at your list I can tell you really know your tomatoes...the best of the best! If I had a garden of only your "Yellow/Orange/Bicolor" would be enough of outstanding flavor and color. Wishing you a great tomato season.

Thanks! But I have to admit, my tomato list isn't so much a product of my own tomato knowledge as it is a product of the institutional knowledge here at TJ, Tville, Tatiana's Tomatobase, etc. I do a lot of reading! I'm still trialing a lot of the greatest hits to find my own favorites. I do love the bicolors, though!

Most are new to me.
The ones I've previously grown have parenthetical comments.
I can't believe I'm still growing so many new-to-me varieties! I was very happy with Polaris, Benevento, Purple Boy, Rosella cherry, and Chocolate Sprinkles cherry last year. All but one of those is a dark tomato, though, so of course I had to add in a few other colors, and then I had to grow at least some of the 34 varieties I chose for the master gardener seedling sale to see how they do in my gardens and compare taste, and then I'd bought several seed packs, had several varieties from trades, etc. etc.
I finally planted almost all of them last month, and then last week I gave away about 60 seedlings, all of them pretty scrawny. I waited to see if I needed to replant any varieties. I did end up replanting a couple or so.

TOMATO indet
African Queen
Beefy Red
Belle du College semidet
Belmonte Pear
Benevento F1 (favorite)
Big Beef F1
Black Cherry (like it a lot)
Black Plum (haven't grown in this climate)

California Sungold
Carolina Dusk (trying again)
Chocolate Sprinkles F1 (favorite)
Cowboy
Daifuku (trying again)
Damsel F1 (one more try-- did not produce much last year)
Franchi’s Red Pear
Girl Girl’s Weird Thing (haven't grown in this climate)
Goldie
Granny’s Throwing
Green Bee F1 (really like)
Hawaiian Pineapple
Jersey Breeze
Kellogg’s Breakfast (haven't grown in this climate)
Magic Bullet
Moon Child
One Trick Pony
Orange Jazz
Pink Berkeley Tie Dye (haven't grown in this climate)
Pink Champagne
Pink Cherrywine F1
Pink Jazz
Polaris (favorite)
Prairie Fire semidet (trying it again)
Pruden’s Purple (old favorite in previous climate)
Purple Boy F1 (favorite)
Raspberry Lyanna
Raya Rey
Reinhard Kraft’s Purple Sugar [not sure this one will make it -- still in the tomato infirmary]
Rosella cherry (favorite)
Sheboygan
Sun Sugar F1 (really like this one)
Sunrise Bumble Bee (haven't grown in this climate)
Sweet Aperitif
Talvez F1
Thorburn’s Lemon Blush
Thorburn’s Terra Cotta

Woodle Orange

TOMATO det in community garden

I tweaked my list from my previous post. This is what I'm actually growing.

BLACK/DARK:
Black Krim (past favorite)
BKX
Black From Tula (past favorite)
Spudatula
Roger's Best Black
Mavitanskite

STRIPED:
Girl Girl's Weird Thing (I'm excited to taste this one!)

HEART:
Brad's Black Heart
Rebel Starfighter - Prime

DWARFS:
Dwarf Arctic Rose (bred from Dwarf Wild Fred x Black From Tula)
Dwarf Purple Heart (bred from Dwarf Wild Fred x Brad's Black Heart)

PASTE:
Cuerno de los Andes
Pomodoro Cuore Antico di Acqui Terme
Uncle Steve's Italian Plum
Experiment - Seeds I harvested from either a Opalka or Cow's Tit fruit that was unusually large and incredibly sweet compared to the other fruits on those plants. I hope these 2 plants that I'm growing from those seeds will produce the same type of fruit. Even if they don't, they'll still be enjoyed.

NOTE: I also wanted to grow Abbattista but both seedlings I started had funky dry, tan patches on the stems so I trashed them instead of risking adding a disease to my garden.

Also, I offered to start plants (from my MMMM seeds) for a friend if she'd let me taste 2 fruits from each plant. This way I can taste more varieties that I want to taste and it saved her some money and hassle to not have to buy or start her own plants. We are both happy with the deal.

DWARF:
Dwarf Scarlet Heart
Dwarf Wild Fred
Sweet Scarlet Dwarf
Grandee (Velmozha)
Grub's Mystery Green

SLICER/BEEFSTEAK:
Dester

SALADETTE/LARGE CHERRY:
Pigletwillie French Black

They are both new to me and are both from YOU via the 22/23 MMMM. Thanks for sharing the seeds!

Except for Black From Tula, Black Krim and the experimental seeds that I collected, all of the tomato varieties that I'm growing this year for myself and my friend are new to me. And all except the experimental are from the 22/23 MMMM. This year I am again focusing mainly on comparing black/dark fruits and comparing large-fruited red paste tomatoes. So far Cow's Tit is my favorite in that last category.

@Seven Bends - They are caged well in 4-1/2 ft. tall cages that I made from concrete reinforcement wire & two "stakes" (made from 1/2 length EMT conduit) zip tied to each cage. I grow all of my tomatoes that way since I don't trim suckers and just let them go crazy. They almost always get huge. :)

I sowed 1 seed/cell, x2 cells/variety, on April 15 and put in tray on a heat mat.

Cuerno de los Andes: Germination was 4 days & 9 days. I planted out the 4 day one and gave the 9 day one to a local gardener to enjoy. (I usually only grow 1 plant of each variety so I can try more varieties each year.)

Pomodoro Cuore Antico di Acqui Terme: I was concerned when there wasn't any germination when my other varieties germinated so I sowed x1 more seed in a new cell. The next day one of the original seeds germinated (11 days) but the 2nd seed from the first planting never germinated. The single seed from the second sowing finally germinated after 32 days. By then it was I was just days away from planting out so I composted the tiny seedling and planted the older seedling.

Both plants are looking healthy and doing fine in the garden. I have a good while yet before normal harvest time starts in my area.

Thanks for the detailed info about both varieties! Sounds like I should test my remaining stash of Cuore Antico... seed to see if I have the same issues with germination. I'll try to remember to do that. I'm glad you were able to get one plant of each despite the issues.
