Rust ruins spring onions because you can't eat the leaves. With garlic you still get a bulb, though probably smaller. I had garlic 3 varieties of garlic planted in 4 different areas of my garden this year and the worst affected was in a raised bed with quite dense soil that dries out easily. I interplant a later variety of garlic into the strawberry bed and that never seems to get rust as badly as the two other, earlier varieties I grow.

Greenhouse - no rust. Heavy soil raised bed 3m away from the greenhouse - very bad rust. Nice soil raised bed 4m away from the bad rust bed - mild rust. Strawberry bed 3m away from the greenhouse - very mild rust.
