Zinnias

I found some really old packets of Zinnia seeds last summer so I just tossed them onto the ground by the side of the porch but didn't really expect any of them to do anything. Oh goodness! And they were butterfly magnets. I am going to make a permanent bed for them this year.

Very pretty! I like their low growing habit. I love zinnias for their long lasting color, for cutting, and for their attractiveness to hummingbirds and beneficial insects. This year I'm trying these two:

Your Zinnia's are absolutely beautiful. I am embarrassed to say that I have a lot of very old Z seed too. I will find a place to throw them in and hope that they grow as beautifully as yours. Thanks for doing this experiment.

2 days ago I sowed seeds for a dwarf Zinnia mix in a grow bag, 20 gallons. The grow bag was vacated when I pulled out the spent freesia bulbs. The packet said the plants grow from 16 to 20 in. tall so I'm hoping the wind won't be a problem.

I also picked up from a nursery three plants of Zany Rose Picotee zinnia. I saw these for the first time last year and I tried to get seeds but I can't find the seeds anywhere!

Due to the unprecedented early season warmth I should be able to sow my seeds in the next week or so. Can't wait!

I had started several zinnias from seed a couple of weeks ago and a couple of days ago I transplanted them outside. My dog 1) bit the tops off the seedlings or 2) dug up what he did not bite. And I am not a big seed starter.

If he can get to any mature zinnia he chews up the leaves. The only ones he will leave alone are the small Profusion type.

I grow the taller zinnias because deadheading a bunch of low growing flowers takes a toll on my back and knees. This year will be the same as last year, 'Will Rogers' (red) and 'Daffodil' (yellow). The butterflies loved them last year and because I finally spaced them farther apart and regularly deadheaded/fertilized them, they lasted all summer. It's amazing how stuff does better when done right. LOL!

The zinnia plants are ready and will be planted in the next two days.

I love Zinnias! That was the first flower I ever grew and didn't kill. They survived and I even saved seeds. Every trip out to the garden was like seeing a happy friend when they were blooming.

There's another small variety called Crystal. He leaves those alone also. But those tiny varieties just don't match the beauty of the tall ones.

I've got Profusion and Crystal growing here and there and everywhere.

I had a volunteer come up and start blooming last week. I thought it was just a plain pale yellow but as it has matured I noticed this afternoon it is subtly a bi-color!
