I used to grow ivy topiaries. I had an ivy frog and an ivy wreath. The wreath was great because I could add a few things to it to decorate for various holidays. Ivy is so very easy to work with. You can do all kinds of things with it although it is quite susceptible to spider mites.

For those just seeing this topic for the first time, Bonsai are fun to make and can be made with just about anything. I strongly encourage you to give it a try. English Ivy is a great plant to practice with as it doesn't take nearly as long to grow and in many places they are a weed that can be harvested at will.

I used to make them (not nearly as great as the professionals, but neat in our eyes) with my brother. This year I want to try using a tender perennial for the Bonsai. I'm still turning the gears as to what plant I'll use, but small flowers are a must. I would love to see the "Tree" in bloom

Spider mites, eh? I'll have to watch for that. I don't know as we had spider mites when I last had a pot of ivy, but there are loads of them around, in recent years (as of about 2014). They're not a typical kind, though; so hopefully they don't hurt ivy. They don't seem to hurt our current houseplants, but they love indoor peppers and other stuff.

Spider Mites aren't something that I've run into. Perhaps it's my location, or dumb luck.

What would your suggestions be to handle indoor plants that have been infected with mites? I do bring in plants from outdoors, and have had to eliminate pests before, usually with hydrogen peroxide.

I watched the move called The New World.
In it Pocahontas was in England where the topiary was astounding.
Just unbelievable at the work involved.
Can't remember where the scene was shot.
