Hello all, I’m glad to be here. I’ve been gardening for only about three years now... my wife had been gardening for about three years before that, but it hadn’t quite caught my attention yet. Now it is a huge interest and pursuit of mine and I really enjoy the benefits it is bringing to our young family in terms of homegrown food, our kids being more connected to natural cycles of life from a young age, and all of us getting more outside time.

Tomatoes have been especially fun to grow, and in the effort to keep learning, I’ve found myself here at this forum. It’ll be fun to get to know some of you more as we interact on here. Thank you to all who sacrifice their time to keep a forum like this rolling.. I’ll probably never know even the half of what you do for us!

In case it doesn’t show on the sidebar or whatnot, we are based out of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA right now, but will be moving in a few months to western North Carolina.

Hi Ginger, it's North Carolina we're going to, but I've visited northern California too, and it was awesome as well. I'm originally from the central valley of CA, which I would say is definitely not as nice as the north (for my preferences, that is).

Thank you, here's to hoping for a smooth move too. We've taken a long time to whittle down where to move to and we're very much looking forward to NC. It seems like a dream. Also hoping there's some gardening space ready for us, and extra space to expand it over time as well!

I'm certainly looking forward to getting more natural rainfall (here in UT we are a high desert), but I also hope that where we're going specifically doesn't cause the extreme disease pressures that I've heard about from people in the south, like too much rainfall, humidity, etc. The adventure of the unknown So that we get it down on "paper" for reference later, my favorite tomatoes here in UT so far are probably Mortgage Lifter, Sungold F1, and Sweetie... but there are so many more varieties to try so I'm expecting many changes in the coming years.

Welcome from sunny (and occasionally smokey) SoCal! Looks like we've been gardening about the same number of years. I grow mostly in containers, due to limited space in our patio. I don't know much about Salt Lake City or North Carolina, but imagine the first is closer what we have here, which is effectively one short season + another shorter one. Wondering if NC would allow you to grow a full long season, which would be great for late varieties. Curious, do you plan to grow in the ground primarily, in containers, or both?

[mention]bobrarian[/mention] Hi Bobby, nice to meet you and thanks for the welcome. By the way, I'm originally from the southern part of central California, Bakersfield. So shout out to my home state. I'm guessing when you say one short season followed by another short season, it's the summer scorch that breaks it in half over there? Here in Salt Lake we've got a non-frost (and yet also not unbearable heat) window of about May to October, so fortunately I've been able to grow longer season varieties already. The area we're headed to in North Carolina will actually be just about the same as where we are now, but with maybe a week added at the beginning and end, and slightly more moderate range in temperature.

As far as containers vs. ground, I'm hoping to have the majority be in the ground or maybe some combination of raised bed if the soil stays too wet, but I'm betting we'll have containers spread around too. This was the first year we were able to have moderate success with growing in containers, so hopefully that's a trend.
