I don't know how to do the 'thanked the author' part.

Maybe "liked the post" is better than "thanked the author".

The exclimation mark on the top right hand side is reprot a post.
Next to it Middle is the quote a post.
Then the thumbs up button is the thank button.
Click once it thanks, click again it un-thanks.
You can't thank yourself either.

Then if you look on the area where you have your information it will say how many times you have been thanked and how many times you thanked.
They are blue and are links to the posts you made that were thanked.
You can then click on one of them to that post.
at the very bottom is a little cartoon cloud you can click on.
That is where you contact the poster.
Don't be afraid to click, there are no dragons waiting.
