Re: Stochastic Contemplations.
coyote issue is maybe done for now.
for the past month, i have had electric poultry fencing up around the coop.
chickens have a limited area to range, but at least they aren't in the coop
all the time. the fence has thwarted several coyote attempts to snatch a chicken
dinner. the coyote went down the road, and started picking off my neighbors chickens.
they lost four in one day, ten over all. a few days ago, i heard a couple shots between 7
and 7:30 am. i was still in bed. the coyote had strolled to the neighbors coop again. he
shot it from his deck with a shot gun. my neighbor does not like to kill wildlife unnecessarily.
he deer hunts, food for the freezer. this coyote had to go. it had become too habituated to
killing chickens. it just wasn't going to stop. still plenty of coyotes around. you can hear them
at night. our chickens will stay confined for the time being. there is the fox that has been around
the neighbors yard. the same neighbor said a wolf had run across our road right in front of his truck
recently when he was going to his shop. wolves have never been a problem for us.
you need to keep your eyes open here. never know what you will see here in the wild kingdom.

Re: Stochastic Contemplations.
I remember the last coyote I shot.
30 Gibbs 150 grain bullet with a ton of powder behind it.
Almost the same energy as a 300 H&H magnum.
Darn near skinned the lowly thing.
The 30 Gibbs was a wildcat round you had to make from a 30-06 case.
I was 13 14 years old and loaded all the ammunition myself including blowing out the casings.
The velocity with a 150 grain bullet is well over 3 thousand feet per second.
That's screaming.
Chicken killer didn't stand a chance.

Charles River Labs scuttles plan to house 43,000 monkeys nearby. EVERYONE around here thought this monkey facility was a bad idea. 43,000 monkeys in one place, what could possibly go wrong?
. Charles River Labs ought to try this along their namesake river in MA and not on our San Bernard River, but I have a feeling the folks up there wouldn’t like having 43,000 monkeys for neighbors either.
Anyway, local action, citizens and the local county government fought this along with PETA and Charles River Labs caved.

That's horrible.
I remember DOW having what they called ag research facility in Lake Jackson.
It was an animal experimentation facility.
They shut it down when people got wind of it.
I was in that place several times and saw what was going on.
They had a bunch of dogs in there with their bark boxes cut out among other things.
Place stank to high heaven.

Re: Stochastic Contemplations.
Several schools in Texas have banned cellphones.
Texas is considering banning them state wide.
Social media with children is like poison in my opinion.
I also think it's played a huge part in the violence going on in public schools.
Some people can deal with insults and bullies but others can't.
And it might not be their mental health totally but what they may be going through at home.
Mean fathers or neglect and then the bullies start up on top of it and you have a situation for disaster.
I got picked on a lot in school because I was short and not from there.
It ended up in fights being beat on by a group.
I didn't want to go to school and hated school.
Lord only knows how I would have reacted if I was being bullied on my phone after school having to put up with my 4 years older than me evil sister at home too.
She would back me in a corner and throw butcer knives at me when my parents weren't around.

Re: Stochastic Contemplations.
I definitely have mixed feelings on the cell phone thing. We need to encourage kids to be off their cell phones more and paying attention to what’s going on around them. But with school shootings and such, they also need them for emergencies. There must be way cell phone companies Can make it possible to turn kids cell phones off, except for phone calls to a limited number of telephone numbers such as 911 or their parents.

The good without far out weighs the bad of having them.
Teachers in the schools that banned them have already seen a big difference or so I've heard.
Many of the modern schools you can't get good reception if any.

Re: Stochastic Contemplations.
Our church is currently doing a message series on digital detox. How we use our devices, smart phones and the like not as utilities but more as time stealing distractions that isolate us from face to face interacting with others. Starting next Sunday the whole church is being invited to unplug from or fast from our smart phones, smart watches, tablets. Doesn’t mean we will ignore these devices for important communication with work or family, but more to stop using them as time consuming unnecessary distractions. Might be partial fasting or complete, it’s up to the individual, I’m still pondering what I should do, partial or complete.
I can definitely see the corrosive effect with how I might use and abuse these devices.

Re: Stochastic Contemplations.
a guy i know taught band at the local high school for decades. a sign i saw up in his room
said any cell phones seen in class will be confiscated until the end of the day, and I will
answer your messages.kids will definitely misuse or over use their phones. parents do need
to keep close tabs on what their kids are doing. there is an app called covenant eyes that can
be installed on phones that will restrict inappropriate sites. it is tough being a kid these days.
this same teacher had a quote on the wall from al capone. i am nice to everyone. some people
mistake nice for weakness. if someone isn't nice to me, weak is not how they will remember me.
something like that.

I've always wanted one but not for a thousand dollars.
A Walther PP in 380.
The American made one is made in Fort Smith Arkansas.
It's a fine piece of work and originally made in Germany.
It's slim and compact and can fit just about anywhere.

Everything is plastic nowadays as it can possibly get.
I guess the expense is related to the old school metal machine work without injection molding and so on.

One more thing.

His time happens to be tomorrow, October 4, 2024.
