Hi Debbie! What a List.
I am glad to see it. We only are overlapping with our variety- Vezunchik, That means lots of more rare varieties for the Tribute
A question, do you think your Volvo Serdtse is the same as one I have Volovo Srce?

European variety that's been around for a long time, so the strain you have may or may not be identical. This one came from a different Ukrainian vendor and is a large, red heart.OhioGardener wrote: ↑Mon Mar 07, 2022 3:05 pm The following varieties are on my tentative Ukraine tribute grow-out list:

I am not sure where mine was from but I believe it was Nikitovka...Here was the description I have
Volovo Srce- indet., regular leaf, high yield of pink heart-shaped fruits, irregular shapes and sizes, from 4 oz to 12 oz. Excellent sweet flavor, meaty flesh with small seed cavities. more sweet than acid, meaty, paste type flesh, 12 lbs/plant.Another great pink 'Oxheart' variety from Serbia (former Yugoslavia).

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Hmmmm....Maybe the spelling of the strain you have should be volovsko srce (Serbian)? I have most of Nikitovka's tomatoes, but not that one. Mine came from another Ukrainian vendor that used to be on EBay under the username edwa-ua2015. My seeds are older which is why I want to grow them out this year. I have some others needing to be grown out too if someone wants to participate but doesn't have Ukrainian seeds.HL2601 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 08, 2022 4:09 pm I am not sure where mine was from but I believe it was Nikitovka...Here was the description I have

Can't find my old seeds so I just ordered more of Ukrainian Heart to plant this year. I have grown it before and it was very good.

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Well, I went ahead and started seeds today. 13 varieties from the 3/7 master list, mostly mmmm donations, and one from Heather's swap circa 2012 I believe. Looking forward to trying a few new early and very early varieties. It was supposed to be cold, but now the forecast is warming up.
Tatiana listed some of the master list varieties (which was very helpful, thank you) as Russian origin, and wonder if there are others that qualify as being grown all over the region. Some are on the list and others are not. I still have an envelope of similar name varieties to research, and hopefully others will chime in with additions or edits to the list.
I mentioned this project to a friend who offered to contact the local Eastern European churches to see if they know of any family having heirloom seeds and is willing to discuss or share a little further down the road. She will likely offer her assistance too. Remarked how she was sitting on her couch and watching the terrible situations unfold and now has some direction to begin helping in a small way.

Birjnesekutsky? Listed as a a large red slicer.
Tatiana does not list the origin, but can anyone experienced in etymology have a shot of identifying ?
Thanks, Lisa

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Lisa, I've found it's often necessary to look them up in Russian or Ukrainian language because a lot of the old Soviet era varieties were developed by Ag institutes of former republics. The countries' official register of plant varieties is most definitive, but there are some garden sites that list history as well.greenthumbomaha wrote: ↑Wed Mar 09, 2022 7:56 pm Well, I went ahead and started seeds today. 13 varieties from the 3/7 master list, mostly mmmm donations, and one from Heather's swap circa 2012 I believe. Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Thanks, Debbie. I'm trying and the 3/7 list was very helpful. Sometimes it's hard to decipher the correct spelling on those narrow handwritten slips we use to save on postage in mmmm. There is some humor in this sad situation in some of the google translations. Still looking for more varieties in my 10 year mmmm collection to grow out.

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
As I posted on another forum, I will grow Rozovyi Kilogrammovyi. I have grown it for several years and love the flavor and production. Very large pink beefsteaks. The plants are enormous also. I am glad to have the chance to circulate these seeds more widely.
I have ordered from Nikitovka several times and have some varieties not listed. I will grow out one called Markiz, also. This is a new to variety.

If anyone has seeds that are not commercially available to a known Ukranian Heirloom that you would like help preserving seeds from, please let me know I have room to add a plant or two. I have ordered Ukranian Heart seeds but since they are commercially available it is more of a tribute that any real need to preserve the seeds for the future.

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Thanks to Heide, I now have seeds for Korichnevyy Rebristyy to grow and share (along with Black Sea Man that I already have). Thanks, Heide for your generosity and for coordinating this grow out swap. I used the online translator out of curiosity and this variety translate to "Brown Ribbed." From Heide's notes:
Korichnevyy Rebristyy - Mid-season (90-100days) variety. Indeterminate tomato, bush grows more than 150 cm (60 in.) tall. Large, black-brown fruits weight 120-150g (4-5oz.) with an excellent, sweet taste. Use fresh.
QUESTION: Are coin envelopes OK for this swap or are plastic zip-top bags preferred/required? I personally use coin envelops and have them on hand but can buy plastic bags if needed. Thanks.

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
I would have but my seeds were started in January. I have a different growing season than most with our extremely hot Summers.
By late June/early July tomatoes are done.
Good luck everyone, I hope you all have a great grow-out.

I find coin envelopes perfectly fine, so long as seeds have been THOROUGHLY dried. I've handled hundreds upon hundreds of seeds in coin envelopes, with perhaps about 0.5% to 1% that get moldy. And, the glue on some of them isn't very good. A small tab of tape insures no spillage.WoodSprite wrote: ↑Sun Mar 13, 2022 6:02 am Thanks to Heide, I now have seeds for Korichnevyy Rebristyy to grow and share (along with Black Sea Man that I already have). Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Is there some required number of seeds or packets we need to send? I believe Ukranian Heart is not highly productive because it was a little late for my area. What is going to happen with the seeds we send? Never really asked any specific questions about this. When I tried growing out ML seeds for Edie it didn't go very well and I didn't end up with much for some reason.

Re: UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT, Interested?
Thanks for that insight, @Tormato. For some reason, I thought your MMMM required the little plastic bags only so I wasn't sure what Heide wanted for this swap. I always dry my seeds longer than is necessary and often do put a little piece of tape on the flap rather than wetting the glue.
