Re: MMMM swap
Different varieties or can you send in duplicates? For example I only have 9 varieties of my micros...You need to submit 10 packs of 5-10 seeds per category entered

Re: MMMM swap
The rules (if there are any at all) are VERY flexible, but normally you try to send in 10 packs of seed of one variety into each category. Of course you could enter the same category twice and send in another variety with 10 packs seeds for that one.
Example: Category Pink, 10 packs of Aunt Ginny's Purple with 5-10 seeds per pack.
If you have 9 varieties of micros you could enter the micro group with 10 packs of 1 variety and then send the rest into the Bonus section of the swap. Or you could send them into the pink, red, or black categories too. You can even send the same variety into more than one category if you have saved enough seed.

This is my first time so was not sure if multiple varieties were wanted or multiple packets of the same variety. Now I and other newbies knowThe rules (if there are any at all) are VERY flexible, but normally you try to send in 10 packs of seed of one variety into each category.

This January I started 20 different type of tomatoes but I only managed to germinate 7, of those 7 -3 where not true type.
But I had good luck with sweet peppers. I can send them in as a bonus.
Thank you for your consideration.

Peppers are the second largest type of veggie seed in the swap. I will post some details after all of the tomato seed info is supplied.
Do you have any room for zucchini seed? I have somewhere around 40 varieties, about half hybrid and half OP, some are Italian varieties.

For newbies with few or no seeds, there's no need to worry about getting a sponsor. There are far more sponsors than newbies, and far more seeds than can be planted.

That likely means that 1 of 2 envelopes from me didn't make it.Whwoz wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 7:54 pmThe only reason I have not participatedin the past (aside from hemisphere timing differences, which can be worked around) is our customs laws. Still short a couple of envelopes from the NH from earlier in the year.

Re: MMMM swap
We have to be flexible with a participant such as yourself. In most categories, for each 10 packs of seeds of a single variety sent in, you would get back 10 different varieties within that category.
Taken to an extreme, I once had a participant send in 10 packs each of 20 different cherry varieties, and they expected 200 different cherries in return. I responded that if 200 varieties do come in they'd get the 200. The 200 happened because cherry varieties are likely second to beefsteaks in popularity.
Sending in 10 packs each of 9 micro varieties would likely be impossible to get back 90 different micro varieties, unless something has really changed in the micro world. You would get back every micro variety that comes in, that you don't have. And if you haven't participated in the Micro Project here, there "might be" experimental micros from the MP sent in to the MMMM. If you grow anything beyond micro tomatoes; other tomatoes, other veggies, fruits, flowers, etc.., we just have to wait to see what comes in. After nearly all packages arrive, I usually post a list of all non-tomato seeds for participants to choose from. That list would likely be posted just before or after Thanksgiving.

Re: MMMM swap
nope still only around 50 or 60 commercial varieties I have been able to locate. I have been slowly acquiring them to grow out and write up. My current crop of micros are all commercial but the seedlings in the house are from the MP

Re: MMMM swap
To be clear for all participants, "micro" means a plant height of about 14 inches or less, although that height is not set in stone. It doesn't have anything to do with the size of the tomatoes, themselves.
Clara, while I'm unsure if you were or were not aware of this, I'm glad you made your post so that a clarification can be made to all.

Re: MMMM swap
As to having all micros: a micro can fit into more than one category. If you have been growing a lot of them, you probably have seeds that fit into different categories:
1. Micro category
2. Reds category
3. Pinks category
4. Yellows category
5. Cherry category
6. Eastern European
7. Knock your Socks Off category.
Send in a different variety of micro for each category.

Re: MMMM swap
Sending in a bunch of micros gets you a free pass to any categories you'd like.Nan6b wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 2:36 pm As to having all micros: a micro can fit into more than one category. If you have been growing a lot of them, you probably have seeds that fit into different categories:

But, I'd rather not advertise crossing into other categories for micros and determinate tomatoes. Just about everything else is fine, as many of the categories of colors can fit into say the Beefsteak category.
The problem with micros and determinates is that if you're unaware of what they are, and plant them among the indeterminates, they will get shaded out. So, i request that seed labels for micros and determinates say so below the variety name and year of harvest, preferably in lower case lettering so there's no confusion as to being part of the variety name. A designation can be abbreviated like... (det.)
I will address seeds, packaging, and labeling in a thread "MMMM requirements", soon to come.

Re: MMMM swap
Wry grin for now commercial Micro varieties are either red or yellow unless you stumbled across seeds for Rosy Finch which is pink.
I agree with Tormato that sending them in for the Micro division is probably safest due to the huge size difference between them and indet or even most det or dwarf tomatoes. My largest plant this year is 12 1/2 inches tall! My shortest are just under 4 inches tall...
I had planned on labeling mine (variety name) Micro Dwarf then year of collection. This is often how they are labeled in the seed selling sites.

Unfortunately correct Tormato, but I do have Brokenbar's Costoluto Genovese and Pervaya Lyubov that you put in the other envelope up and growing.Tormato wrote: ↑Sun Aug 30, 2020 1:09 pmThat likely means that 1 of 2 envelopes from me didn't make it.Whwoz wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 7:54 pmThe only reason I have not participatedin the past (aside from hemisphere timing differences, which can be worked around) is our customs laws. Planted 6 I think it was out of that envelope, with 3 up with high germination percentage, others no show. Need to sow a few more of them.

Re: MMMM swap
I've heard that peppers sometimes have very low or no germination rates. Speculation is that ripe looking peppers may not have fully developed seed, and there's really not a visible difference to go by. Therefore, some gardeners only harvest seed from the most overripe peppers they can pick, just prior to them rotting on the plant.

Re: MMMM swap
Yep, the customs regulations have become stricter... I better not risk sending stuff which may get confiscated.. and the stuff arriving to my end may end up confiscated as well ..

Peppers like a lot of heat to germinate.
