Re: i have kittens
i don't have that kind of dog. she doesn't do well with chickens and squirrels.
the kittens, i think she is trying to figure them out. she has seen my neighbors
cats on the road while walking. those cats live with dogs, so they don't run right
off if we are near by. but our cats? she just doesn't quite know what to do about them.
i'm talking nice to them, they aren't running off, oh my gosh, he is touching them!! my
guy is touching them!!
it is something to see.

Re: i have kittens
I think if your dog sees you interacting and fondling the kittens in a positive manner, she should take the cue from you that these are desirable family members and not to be treated as outsiders to be chased or attacked. One of our dogs was a young stray that looked like a cross between a yellow lab and a greyhound. You could tell she really wanted to get after our cats in the beginning. All our animals are indoor/outdoor by their choice, so I think her seeing them inside our house was a big clue that they were off-limits. Not to mention that anytime I saw her starting to give them the stalking evil eye look, I would in a deep nasty voice tell her she was a Bad Dog and to not Even Think About It and Go Lay Down! She gave it up after a few weeks and never harmed the cats. She did continue to fight with raccoons and dig up rabbit dens and chase whatever moved.

Re: i have kittens
Neighbor moved in nextdoor years ago with a big cat chasing dog.
It took one time with a big busy tree branch a scolding and chased to the house to end all that.
Another puppy pit bull was broken the same way someone else showed up with.
From then on they were all buddies.

Good for you dude.
"They like to climb." haha yeah that is some truth right there.
The last litter of kittens I remember here were a beautiful varied litter from "mama cat", a calico stray that would show up at times. That was probably 35 years ago.

Re: i have kittens
got a question.
i am still feeding my cats, born around june kitty chow.
my thinking being they are out door cats, and we have long winters.
is there any benefit to that or should i switch them to adult cat food?
wait till warmer weather perhaps?
both cats are doing fine. weather doesn't seem to bother them much.
well, except for todays blizzard. they like patrolling the farm yard.
miina, the girl, and my dog are very friendly with each other. toivo, the
boy could care less about my dog. two very different personalities they have.
miina is a social butter fly, just loves attention, and actively seeks it. toivio is
more independent. he likes his cuddles, and doesn't like waiting his turn to be
held, but he is more independent. miina is more under foot, and wants to see
everything i do when i am out doors, and is always trying to come in the house.
haven't caught a mouse in the house in several weeks. we had them through out the place.

Re: i have kittens
Kitten chow has a lot more calories. They should be on kitten chow until they are a year old technically. I would especially keep them on kitten chow during the winter when the cold means shivering and keeping themselves warm and using up more energy so they will need the extra calories

Re: i have kittens
My two, momma and her boy kitten, are completely spoiled when it comes to food. When I see raw chicken or turkey on sale, into the freezer loads of it goes. The standard recipe is 7 parts boiled meat, 2 parts cooked rice, and a 1 part cooked peas and carrots mix.
I now get one large bag of Purina Complete Cat Chow to supplement their other food. Sometimes I forget that I am running low and haven't thawed out the raw meat. Then it will be one day of a donated can of pink salmon mixed with the dry. They now generally pick around the dry to eat the fish. If I only put out dry, they will walk away, and only come back when they are really hungry. 2 to 3 meals a day with these spoiled cats.
The latest donation was some canned light tuna mush. It now contains 20% textured soy protein, which I've read is not good for cats, so they're not getting that. Also, they now pick around the whole grains of cooked rice to get to the meat. I now puree the rice with the carrots and peas. The meat is either pureed, chopped fine or shredded, always mixing things up so they don't get bored. They are completely indoors for the winter, with maybe a 15 run and play outside if it's sunny warmer and no wind. When spring comes, I will supervise them when I'm out in the garden, but they come inside when I do.
Momma just got fixed, which meant separating them inside for 1 week. Daily, their crying for each other got louder. Finally, they are back together.

Re: i have kittens
gary, you have some pampered cats there.
if you have a restaurant near you that serves turkey dinners on sunday, you
can more than likely get necks and giblets at little or no cost. the places here
throw the giblets out. call or stop in and make arrangements. might take a week
or two to get everybody on the same page. be prompt to pick up.

Re: i have kittens
had a bit of a scare.
wednesday and thursday, there was no sign of miina.
she would always be the first one out to greet me or
perched on the porch rail waiting for me in the morning, but
two days, and no sign of her. no sign of an altercation with predators.
her brother toivo was acting a little lost without her. usually when outside
animals disappear here, they stay gone. i could not or was not ready
to think i would not see that friendly little cat again.
this morning when i went out to feed the chickens, and toivo, i opened the barn
door, and there she was! no idea where she got off too. she looks ok. a little lighter
maybe, and a tired look in her eye, but ALIVE.
happy day

Re: i have kittens
We had a cat named Cali for years.
She was gone for a month as she must have got lost or something.
We lived in the country.
She was miles away at another place we used to live.
We got her back and she was glad to see us.
The people loved her because she was a gopher eater.

Re: i have kittens
Hmmmm, is she of breeding age? Cats can get pregnant as early as 4 months old. Maybe going through her first heat? I guess you'll know in about 9 weeks.

Re: i have kittens
the cats are currently 8 months old.
if there are kittens in 9 weeks, that would put miina close to 10 months old.

Re: i have kittens
One place we rented came with a female cat.
She was young but I don't know how young.
She ended up pregnant and in the middle of the night she had two kittens.
One was dead and the other was going to die but I got the placenta off it's nose and helped it get going.
The other I didn't get to in time.
I put the little kitty on its mother's test and let it nurse.
Went back to bed.
The next morning the mother came into the bedroom dropped the new born kitten on my chest and walked off.
So I cuddled it and it was like this for some time.
The mother would let it nurse and cuddle but it mostly hung out with me.
The little kitten drove its mother crazy attacking her and playing.
Sometimes it would sleep with our dog Bullet.
Bullet would Carry it's mother around in her mouth and play.
We had other cats too that it played with as well.
The mother's name was Fuzz Tail and the baby I named Bear Cat.
It also got along with the neighbors dog we adopted and named Boo Boo.
Bear Cat would ride around in my coat pocket or in the front pocket of my hoodie.
It would crawl up into my underwear and curl up in the feed bowl.
It would play chase the ball when it rolled off the roof.
Bear Cat and the rest of our cats acted like dogs more than cats.
They loved to play together in the house.
One would be in a box in the hall another on the bed and one or two in the living room on the coffee table.
Boo Boo would run through the house and get swatted at by each cat as he went by.
Back and forth he would got with him barking and the cats hissing and swatting until they were worn out.
I never tried to stop them they were having so much fun.
I think that's why everyone's kids liked me too.
I never got on to them for having fun and would only do it if one of them was going to get hurt like climbing in a dead tree or playing with matches.
