I know many of us here have mourned the demise of the old Promix soils like HP Promix, etc. These types of "plain" soil mixes were ideal for seed starting & for use in Earthboxes or other self watering containers. The company came out with smaller packs of soil but with added fertilizers, in brightly colored packaging. I did not like them.
Recently I saw these large bales @ Home Depot, but the packaging was bright like the newer stuff, not the plain white as in the past. Plus there's no HP or MX in the name. Has anyone tried this yet?

I bought one of the bales of ProMix all-purpose mix (the product you posted) a couple of years ago and was happy with it. I liked it better than their moisture potting mix and premium potting mix, both of which I wasn't crazy about after using them for awhile.

Promix HP, BX etc. still exist, but they're marketed to professional growers and aren't generally sold at big box stores like Home Depot. The product line is here:

Our local garden centers carry products from both of the lines, and I was able to buy a big bale of Promix BX at my local Ace hardware last summer. I think maybe I prefer the Promix BX a little over the ProMix all-purpose mix, but I haven't used them side by side so I can't say for sure.

I always use the Promix for "veggies and herbs, organic" (coloured) which contains nutrients. I use Promix HP(grey bag) for seed starting. I've used these for years and have been happy with both.

We can no longer find the HP bags here & I think many places on or near the western states too, there was a post here a while back about it. The HP is preferred for Earthboxes because there are no added fertilizers (you add granulated ones in a strip).
I've made do with Sunshine Mix but have to add perlite. I suppose I'll do the same if this new Promix needs more too.

They still have lots of distributors listed in the western US, so it seems like some garden center or independent hardware store near you could order it for you if Amazon isn't a good option for you.

I remember the past discussion and I probably made these same suggestions before, but they still seem like good ones to me so here they are again.

Yes I did contact the company & was told due to high shipping costs they will no longer sell to certain states. I'm aware of the sky high prices on Amazon. The 3 cubic bales used to sold @ Lowe's for $36 a couple of years ago. I'm not paying close to $100 for any soil mix

The local price for 3.8 cubic foot bales of BX or HP here is about $55 now, and it makes sense that shipping for something that large and heavy (60lbs) would add another $50 to the price. I agree, that's a painful price and I wouldn't pay it, either. But even a bale of plain old peat moss costs a fortune now.

Like I said, I didn't hate the All-purpose mix. I think if you add extra perlite to it you'll probably do okay. But be aware the ingredients are different (the all-purpose has peat humus that's not in HP, and the HP has a wetting agent that's not in the all-purpose). Both are peat-based with no coir, whereas Sunshine #4 is peat and coir.

Been there done that. Not this year yet. My local hydro store went out of business last year, all they had was the Sunshine Mix. They did have Promix about 10 years ago for a very short time, then stopped when Lowe's started carrying it. I just refilled all my EB's last year with Sunshine Mix so I'm good for a couple of years. Just thought I'd ask around about the new Promix ahead of time. Thanks for all your input

I been using the BX+ for the last 5 or 6 years and the 2025 price for 3.8 cu. ft. bale is $38.40, up from $33.00 in 2019. I drive 18 miles to get it and I usually get 4 bales

I use the red and black large bricks by promix. Used the yellow once because it’s all there was and I wouldn’t recommend that one.
