I'm wondering if seeds saved from the new GMO purple cherry tomatoes will grow the same plant and produce the same tomatoes next year??

While it would be illegal to grow most GMOs because of things like gene patents (in the USA, at least), the likelihood of the seeds growing is pretty great. There's a possibility (probably not a great one) that they might have introduced some kind of sterility, like cytoplasmic male sterility, or something, though, considering what I've read from a tomato patent that wasn't particularly a GMO tomato (it did mention cytoplasmic male sterility; so, it does seem to be something that they might think they want to introduce if they figure out how to do it economically).

I would very much discourage growing it, though, even if you're comfortable with breaking patent laws. You don't want to spread patented genes to the unweary who won't know they're growing illegal plants, by growing the plants and trading seeds that were accidentally cross-pollinated by them (assuming they're fertile, which they probably are).

Additionally, a GMO cherry tomato could also potentially be an F1 hybrid, and thus not breed true.

Another thing to consider is that the grocery store tomatoes may have been adapted for greenhouse production, and might not be the best fit for outdoors in the ground.

Finnish equivalence of the USDA has issued yesterday a warning that someone in EU is now selling seeds collected from 2024 crop of Norfolk Purple Tomato on a Facebook-page. The seeds and plants are not approved in EU and are declared illegal. They are now stating that the seeds and plants grown from those must be destroyed such way that the original seeds or seeds of grown tomatoes will not germinate. I think that it has been totally foolish to sell those seeds online, when the maker declares that the seeds and plant material is only allowed in USA and that no seeds or plants can be sold.

My opinion GMOs have changed so that a purple GMO tomato could be something which I would grow, but I am against engineering plants which have insecticides in them or some terminator genes, because such could cause serious harm, when the genes are passed to other varieties via cross pollination. It may take years before that variety is approved to be sold in EU, so I have to wait, unless I become a law breaker and grow those in a secret place like some guys here grow other illegal plants.

Norfolk stated that this variety is open pollinating, not a hybrid, and you absolutly can save seeds. They should grow true, unless there was a cross pollination...which is rare.

I bought 10 seeds from Northfolk last year and grew several plants. The tomatoes are really cool looking but the taste is pretty average in my opinion. Since they are OP I will try to cross them to a few better testing tomatoes to see what will happen. Unfortunately, but the contract from Northfalk I can not sell sell seeds of plans from derived from the original seeds.

However, I bought several packs of cherry tomatoes from Lidl and they were unmistakably the same tomatoes which I drew. I saved some seeds but I did not do research, what I can legally do with the seeds saved from a supermarket bought tomatoes.

In any way I highly support efforts to produce GMO plants which for some reasons people are shy to try at the age of AI.

Based on the information on the NHP website the tomatoes sold in stores are not exactly same as the seeds, which were sold to home gardeners. https://www.norfolkhealthyproduce.com/faqs The ones sold in stores are called Empress. I wish the Lidls here would sell them too, but it is not yet allowed in EU.
