These tomatoes pictured are? They look good. Are these some long keepers you grew or are they from some other source?Cornelius_Gotchberg wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 8:26 am Let's_Get_This_Party_Started!

They loosely resemble long-lasting Mountain Merit and Mountain Pride hybrids.
This off season's approach is to buy 4-to 5 days in advance and let 'em ripen in the sun.
Anxiously await the Bushel Boy Farms selections, which should be coming along in a coupla months (https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story ... 295530001/)

Actually, they haven't been that bad; The Gotch's KNACK for pickin' 'em and his...um...curing system have produced results that've been not only acceptable, but darn right positive.

A red ball from Metro Market. Yuk. I wouldn't waste my money on those. If I want something red in my salad this time of the year, I will buy a pepper.Cornelius_Gotchberg wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 9:25 amFrom Metro Market with no more description that "Red Tomatoes on The Vine" so yer guess is as good as mine.karstopography wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 8:50 amThese tomatoes pictured are? That is hardly considered a BLT. What kind of bacon did you put on that poor pitiful excuse of a sandwich?

Re: 2024 Leap Year Of The BLT!
I’d eat that BLT. Average bacon + average lettuce + indifferent tomato = good sandwich, so long as the bread and mayo aren’t terrible. The sum is greater than the individual ingredients in the case of a BLT.
I wouldn’t take an average store bought tomato, slice it up with a sprinkle of salt and eat it without anything else. I’ve done this and it’s terrible. But, a so-so tomato can “hide” in a BLT and not ruin the deal. A hamburger is the same, a good place for a just okay tomato.
Of course, a BLT is something I’ll order in a sandwich place for lunch knowing full well I won’t be getting a great tomato 99% of the time.
The bacon needs some acidity and maybe a little moisture and even a halfway decent store bought tomato can supply that.

Old Brooks is the tomato. Made 1.5 sammies because there was no way one was going to cut it.

@karstopography; not sure whence you's hail, but Bay City, TX to Madison is three (3) hardiness zones and >1200 miles/~2000kms NNE https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Bay+Cit ... ?entry=ttu
That said, up in these here parts we can always get good lettuce, good bacon, good MAYO, & good bread....and winter Tomatoes are good enough for someone who grew up with six (6) sibs and et (sic) what was put in front of him; we always had two (2) choices: Take It Or Leave It.
@Mark_Thompson; we have a whole Leap Year ahead of us...but yer starting it out with no lettuce...?
The Gotch, for one, is looking forward to pictures of fresh produce to ease us through harsh winter...paging @Whwoz...who's probably getting ready to pull Garlic

Busted! Lettuce is EXPENSIVE here. Last week I used Chinese cabbage and it worked out pretty well, but this week I was just hoping no one would catch me. Definitely missed the crunch, sandwich isn’t the same without it.
