I know a guy that does this in the same spot every year to make himself his own private fishing spot. It works. The problem with this is that in this state it is illegal to add debris into the waters.

I can just see someone putting a fake Christmas tree in the lake.

I would say most public and private lakes use trees this way. There will be a collection pile near the boat ramp. Winter boaters can take as many as they can fit in the boat and dump them. GPS has really changed the game in this way, being able to go back later and find the same spot. A lot of reservoirs don't have much in the way of bottom structure, so this way you at least make some cover for the small fry and help concentrate the bigger fish to make them easier to catch.

Our association did this, actually brought in a contractor to sink dozens of bundles of Christmas trees around our lake. However, these Christmas trees only last a couple of years underwater before disintegrating. Seemed like a waste of money for such a short lived solution.

Probably the best use I’ve seen for discarded Christmas trees is building dunes. Christmas trees lined up along the edge of the dune/beach line really do trap the fine windblown sand here on our beaches and help rebuild sand dunes washed away during hurricanes.

I never will forget my cat that brought a bird in the house.
It got away and flew into the Christmas tree with the cat right behind it and into the tree.

I imagine they rot a bit quicker in Texas than up north. And I certainly could not imagine paying someone to do it. The idea is generally for people to take an active role and build the habitat where they want it.

That stack was higher last week, I think, so someone has been busy. I didn't take any out because I don't fish at this lake much. The dogs would have loved it. Unfortunately my local lake is closed to boats during the winter. I don't know if there is a pile there or not. I have seen piles of Christmas trees stacked on ice at times, which serves the same function as hauling them out by boat.

When I read the thread title last week, I honestly thought it meant another way other than this...this what I think of when I hear Christmas tree recycling.

My mother used to cut the branches and lay them on her perennial gardens to help prevent the thaw/freezes that uproot plants up here. It worked well. She would clean them up in the spring.

We grew a Norfolk Pine at 6 “.We use it as our Xmas tree.
Back in Pa.at our family’s homestead we always bought live trees and planted them after Xmas.They are only about 100 bucs nowadays.
