Ukraine Varieties for Themed Garden

I'm looking for suggestions to compile a broad list of varieties of plants (flowers, peppers, melons, etc) originating from the Ukraine, for a themed garden.

I'm planning to purchase Ukrainian seed varieties from Baker Creek i.e. rareseeds.com to get in on their 100% Ukrainian Relief fundraising for refugees which ends Sunday.

Another member has posted a list of their seeds purchased to grow for future mmmm donation from this Baker Creek fundraiser in Sales and Promotions Section. I hope others will also post purchases if they wish to participate.

This garden will hopefully start conversations with my neighbors and of course I'll be sharing my plot plan here.

- Lisa

When I reformatted this post I accidently deleted Tatiana has 55 Ukrainian varieties of tomatoes listed in the Country of Origin secition.

Lisa,
One I love that I posted about on my Instagram is Ukrainian Purple aka Purple Russian. Many people know this one as Purple Russian but it in fact is from Ukraine. Evidently there is another tomato named Purple Russian, so this tomato's name was changed. It is a somewhat wispy leaf, tall plant producing elongated 4-5 oz plum shapes, purple with brick interior. Just an excellent producer and a real gem. I am growing it this year too and will have it at my plant sale as a tribute to Ukraine. If you need seeds please PM me.

@HL2601 What a beautiful photo, I love your background! I can just imagine how juicy and ripe those tomatoes must taste!

I did order a few things from Baker Creek this morning, even though I don't use them very often. Worthy cause.

Great pic of Ukraine Purple, we've grown this one too and it sure is a great producer.
I have another Ukrainian tomato I got from Lindalana, called Yellow Clusters. It's a midseason tangerine orange beefsteak, quite productive and we liked it a lot. That is from some years ago, but I'll check my seed stash if you're interested, or to the MMM if there's a plan for that next fall.

I just checked my MMMM spreadsheet and see the following are from Ukraine, at least that's what I found when looking them up online.

Black From Tula
Pink (packet info indicated Lindalana brought it back from Russia)
Purple Russian

There may be others that are from Ukraine but identified as originating in Russia because of Ukraine's inclusion in the Soviet Union at that time. No way for me to know.

I checked my database and I've got seeds for Black from Tula, Purple Russian and Ukranian Heart TNMUJ Strain. I'm going to add all of them to my 2022 grow list.

Their national flower is the sunflower. So might I suggest planting some sunflowers also?

I received 'Debbie's Ukrainian Plum' in the MMMM swap. I was planning to grow it to honour my favourite (late) cousin Debbie, who's mother (my Aunt through marriage) is of Ukrainian heritage. The name touched me personally. Now, it has even more meaning.

This one came from me and I'd love to see pictures of how it grows for you. I've labeled it as an "experimental" because I've only grown it out for 2 years and can't be fully certain yet that it's stable. It was the same both years for me though and it definitely originates in Ukraine. The story is that it grew from a seed packet that I purchased as "Yantarniy Med" or "Amber Honey" which it definitely is not. The vendor was Nikitovka which is located in Irpin, Ukraine. In fact, I just got a message from them today because I sent them a note after I saw a video on Twitter of a Russian tank column being destroyed in their town. They're nice people and wrote back saying they're in shock over what's happening (understandably), but they and their employees are OK.

Thank you for the context @OhioGardener. I will surely report back on how the variety does in my locale.

In the non-tomato category, I have a soup pea called "Amplissimo" which I got from Annapolis two years ago. I believe the full name of the pea is Amplissimo Viktoria Ukrainskaya, from Ukraine. I'm planning to grow it again this season.
These are about 5 1/2 ft tall and relatively early compared to some other soup peas I grew. The peas are like a chick pea in color and taste.
I can send you seeds, Lisa, if you have space for a tall pea in your themed garden.

I also have non-tomato Ukrainian varieties and won't be able to grow them all out this year. If anyone is looking for a Ukrainian variety to grow out for the next Mmmm swap, feel free to PM me.

Anything in summer squash/zucchini?

Can you list the types (not varieties) of seeds that you have?

I'll post the non-tomato varieties I have for growing out this evening. I've decided that I'll be growing out a number of tomato and non-tomato Nikitovka seeds this season in honor of the strength of Ukrainian people. Just this morning Irpin popped up in my Twitter feed again and it seems they're under attack and in the direct path of Putin's forces attempting to encircle Kyiv (the correct Ukrainian spelling). I'm praying for them and for all Ukrainians. I'm glad I put in several big orders just before this happened and hope my business helped them a little.

I'm sharing a Twitter link to one of the least graphic videos which still shows the horror and war crimes that Ukrainian people are being subjected to as a result of Russian lies:

Lisa,
I have thought a lot about what you are doing; its super. I have also decided to grow some Ukrainian tomatoes in honor of the strong people of Ukraine.

I am concerned about the loss of the agriculture and farmers' land and production and even personal seeds that may be lost due to the invasion. As we all watch the hardships being endured by the people of Ukraine, it makes me feel so helpless. Not to get political ( at all) but of course I go to tomatoes for comfort and I know so many great ones have come from that region.

Since it seems from this thread, others may be interested in growing Ukrainian tomatoes as a measure of solidarity, , would anyone want to participate in a UKRAINE TRIBUTE GROW OUT? I would be happy to organize. If there is interest I will post another thread where people could sign up what they are growing so we don't have lots of duplicates.

I wondered how many Ukrainian varieties are out there..so I went to research at Tatianna's. I compiled a more simple alphabetized list in case anyone else is also interested. Anything that was tagged with Ukraine is on this list-which could mean the seed source was Ukrainian but perhaps the tomato was not. I haven't looked at all the individual varieties but this is a good jumping off point at least. I would encourage anyone interested to research further of course. Its great that folks are chiming in with other lists too.

.
 Heide

Here is the list from Tatiana's. I will add others as they come in if people submit them.
Feel free to add varieties you know about that are not listed, as well as list varieties that are not in fact Ukrainian.
