Cat got a dinner guest

Our cats are roaming the backyard on leashes and I put some dry food for them to eat outdoors. This hedgehog has noticed it and comes every evening to have dinner with our cats. The cat's do not seem to mind it or maybe they know that there is nothing they can do to that spiky guest.

What a funny animal to have roaming the back yard. I have only ever seen them in zoos.

We had them in England and would sometimes give them milk with bread soaked in it. Very cute!

Such a sweet little animal :D We met one once while visiting a friend's place in the country in Spain. It totally rolled in a ball though, so I never got a look at its face.
I believe hedghogs also eat insects, don't they? That would make them a garden ally too! 8-)

Hedgehogs are omnivores like opossums.
Fed a constant diet of only one thing leads to health problems.
I had one a girl gave me named Harvey.
My dog Bullet would carry it around in her mouth.
I thought it ran away one time and Bullet came running up and dropped Harvey in front of me unharmed.
Bullet wouldn't harm a fly she was so kind to all animals.
Even little birds.
The squirrels used to eat with her.

What I have read is that the hedgehogs can eat plants and mushrooms, but only if there is nothing else to eat. We have a lot of fallen apples on the ground and I have never seen a hedgehog eating them, even such pictures are drawn to some children's books. Once I saw a hedgehog eating a crow carcass.

I have setup a cage with chicken wire hanging low, so that the hedgehogs can go in and out but magpies and cats will not go there, where I have food and water for them. There are two bigger ones, which dine there regularly. Unfortunately this year we have not seen any babies.

We could really do with some hedgehogs around here to take care of all the insects AND the fallen apples! Maybe they would enjoy the extra tomatoes too....
