The very best of the very best was David Bowie at a place called The Backyard out west of Austin.
Small venue with a natural amphitheater.
Nothing compares when he did about 25 songs.

Never saw Bowie. My brothers were hugh fans and I had plenty of opportunity, just never did.
Best of the best you say. Saw James Gang in one of their first shows. Small opera house in St. Louis. Everyone had that look after the show, that said, what did we just experience. Hard to explain but a few hundred at the show mainly mulled around on the street after the show. Smiles ear to ear. Best of the best, need to think that one over.

Not say best if the best for everyone or even best artist.
Just for me as far as concerts go.
Not really a concert fan but when I got the opportunity I jumped on it.
This coming from someone that was/is in a position to get free tickets.
Just don't like the crowds.
With Bowie ia was easy in and easy out.
Plenty of elbow room too.

What a list! I especially agree with you assessment of Fleetwood Mac. The real band was Peter Green's Fleetwod Mac. No yowling female singers. I would however include Janis Joplin on the list. The one group/concert I missed was Pink Floyd. One that really put on a show and played great music was The Rolling Stones (twenty years ago) and probably still does from their wheelchairs. As a college student my roommate and I followed the Moody Blues for three concerts in four days. I forget more of the concerts than I remember. A couple years ago my youngest son took me to see The Who with all the originals except the drummer. Ringo Starr's son was on skins and really is good...better than his father, actually.

I saw them just after Peter Green left. I think it was Kirwan and Spencer on guitars. Kiln House had just come out. Probably '70-'71. Mick Fleetwood was a real treat to watch.

Saw the Moody Blues in Austin years ago.
Saw Jackson Brown about the same time front row seats due to an inside source.
Roger Waters and many more.
One bunch I got sick of was ZZ Top.
They took forever to show up and were drunk off their tails.
Stumbled around on stage for a few songs and walked out.
Jackson Brown got into a political rant and turned me off.
Went to the California Jam II.
TOTAL MAD HOUSE.
Some kid sitting on a fence we were both on handed me a joint.
HE must have been all of 13 years old.
Parents were way up front and left him with some weed.
I had a ticket but never used it.
The crowd busted down the fence and we all just charged in.
Then there was the infamous Hells Angels killing when the Rolling Stones hired them for security.
What an idiot move that was.
Wasn't there for that one thank god.
Had tickets to them 20 years or so and gave mine to a girl that went with my wife instead of me.
Not sorry for it either.
My wife a friend and some gal went to see Crosby Stills and Nash in Austin back in the mid 80's.
The gal got trashed and took all her clothes off and was flopping around on everyone.
Ended up passed out in the mud.
Saw Steppenwolf way back and some guy puked the whole concert.
Sick as a dog before it even started.
Back in the 80's My wife a gal and a black friend I worked with went to a Willy Nelson July 4th event.
Hot as hell and miserable.
One of them Farm Aid things.
Several people called my friend the N word but he let it slide off like water off a ducks back.
He and I had to use the porta Jon.
Stood in line only to find out everyone was urinating on some hippie passed out on the ground.
Then some how a realy smelly homless person was there on acid.
Ozzy was going to play in Odessa but the religious folks didn't want a devil worshiper there.
Had tickets and they were a wash.
The only true country singer I went to go see was Don Williams.
What an act.

Due to my inside sources for tickets from two different directions and literally just up the street from where many concerts are held in Austin I got to see a lot of people.
Going back to the Roger Waters event there was some guy that totally freaked out when they played Welcome to the Machine.
They had some contraption fly over every one with lights.
Some guy on LSD totally flipped and got tangled up under the folding chairs.
He was clawing at everything in reach like a wild animal.

Saw Neil Young same place.
Good long show.
Had radio control rats running around on stage.
David Gilmore too.
Saw ZZ Top again and the music was too loud.
Made my ears ring.
The guess Who I saw there also.
Saw Brian Seltzer and his big band at the KLRU place at UT.
Sat right behind Kris Kristofferson.
What a nice person he put up with so many people wanting his autograph and never complaining about it.
I never asked for one but he got a big kick out of a guy we brought with us.
It was all you can drink beer and this guy got so drunk he fell over in the chairs and was flopping all over people.
He was the host of the show.
It was a tribute to Carl Perkins.
You had to cheer and clap when the signs went up because it was televised.
Also as the crowd dispersed everyone had to get closer so it looked like the place was packed on TV.
Some girl and I got lost looking for the bathroom.
We found the men's down in the basement but couldn't find one for her.
I stood guard at the door for her.
Wasn't necessarily needed because we weren't even close to where we were supposed to be and no one else was around.
No idea who she was and we were surely lost.

Yep, had forgotten about Jackson Browne. Small venue, mid 70's, where he had a captive audience. Listened to the commentary through the show. Only Rungren could spew more political jabber than Browne. But his music made up for it. No one could bring a studio sound to a live show like Rungren. Big fans among those folks I knew at the time. One good friend saw him 50 times, but took him close to 40 years to get there.

Those are all bands that I grew up listening to and had their albums. They never played a concert here though.

Yea the whole fiasco with Ozzy being banned in Odessa was just a little over the top.
He was rescheduled but then caller in sick and didn't make that one either.
If memory serves me correctly.
One thing is for sure we were out money and didn't see Ozzy.
He probably doesn't remember it but I do.
The woman I can get tickets from broke her arm at the second Woodstock event.
She fell out of the back of a bus.
She even laughed about it.
Another guy went to go see Ted Nugent and the guy almost started a riot in Austin with his BS about Mexicans.
Never really liked the guy to begin with and now even more can't stand his music.

Not really a concert but had tickets to go see George Carlin.
Called in sick and died before he could come back.
Saw him once before in Austin and some older couple got up and walked out.
Seems as though they had only seen him on The Tonight's Show.
Had no idea how dirty mouthed he was.
I kind of felt bad for them.

You folks in Austin have such a vibrant music community. Any day of the week, music of all kinds can be heard. My best childhood friend settled in Austin in the early 80's. He would fill in on local radio shows, bringing in his favorite music. I have one of his collections he sent me close to 30 years ago. Easily 200 hours of varied tunes. My wife found it buried the other day and didn't know where it came from. Is Austin's music scene still the place to be?

Not for sure that will ever be the same as it was.
Too many rich people got their hands in it.
Many say it's pretty much over and living on past glory.
Too expensive to live there and the bars shut down for so long.
Regardless it will never be like it was 30 years ago.
One of my life long friends works for KLBJ and KGSR in Austin as a remote DJ and at the station.
She lives out in the middle of nowhere.

Speaking of the Austin music scene.
An old bar music place called The hole in the wall is or was about to go belly up.
15,000 a month rent on the lease.
Yes that's not a typo.
It's on the drag close to UT.
The city of Austin stepped in and gave the owner 1.6 million dollars to help keep it open.
This is a grant they don't have to pay back.
They also negotiated a 20 year lease with the property owners.
I looked the owners up and it's a huge realty company nation wide.
I won't go any farther but they are just a bunch of greedy dirtbag land holders sucking the life and spirit out of Austin and other places.
The demographics of the area just doesn't seem to want to be in these old bars and if they did they are too young.
Many of the older people have been pushed out for highrise apartments with kids going to UT that are too young to drink.
The place I used to go up the street was closed down years ago for modern development in 95.
It was called The Austin Outhouse and was biker friendly.
Every time my wife and I got into some sort of argument I would get on my motorcycle and go to the Outhouse.
She never knew where I went.
A man has to have a secret hiding place and the Outhouse was mine.
