Hi from Kansas!

I used to be on the old IDigMyGarden forum under the same 'ness' name. I got out of the gardening forum world when that closed up. I never participated in Tomatoville after it took over, though I read a few times. Today I saw that's gone, so I got to searching and found this place. I like this color scheme better than the pink :D

I'm a backyard suburban gardener who has generally used the Square Foot method. For many years I have used raised beds totaling 96 SF. I tore those out last fall due to rot, and soon I'll build some new ones. The current plan is to enclose it with a 4-foot picket fence because of an ongoing rabbit problem. I typically do heirloom varieties, just because, but always have a few hybrids too. Mostly tomatoes, lettuce, beans, snow/snap peas, peppers/chiles, but also a few other things. I've also kept a few fruit shrubs -- currant and gooseberries. Gonna need to replace them the last of those this spring.

Anyway, I hope to learn and occasionally contribute here if I can add some value. This looks like an informative, friendly and active place.

John

Hi John, welcome to Tomato Junction! We garden no-till with cattle panels here, but I completely get the rabbit issue! (and deer, squirrels, ...) ;) Enjoy building your new boxes and fence!

Welcome to the Junction! IDig was great in it's day. What happened there will NEVER happen here. This is such a warm friendly site that I'm sure you will feel right at home. So glad that you like the color scheme here. :)

Thanks to all for the very warm welcome! Kinda cool to see folks from around the world here too. I had to look up Emsworth, UK and Trafalgar, Australia!

Whwoz , what's the weather like down there now? You look to be quite far south.

Pepperhead rings a bell. Was that your name in IDig too? Also -- when did that close down? Feels like about 6-8 years ago.

ness Yes, I had the same name there as here. I don't recall what year they shut down, but it was about that long ago.

Welcome from SW Pennsylvania! The rabbits & ground hogs here dig under my fence; I had to put a trench fence at the bottom to keep 'em out.

ness weather here in mid summer is typically warm to hot, 75F to 110F, with less than 2 inches of rain in January and February, some years we have had less than 0.25 of an inch for both months combined. With the La Nina that is in progress last summer was wet, over 8 inches for the two months.

Currently days are around 85, with Sunday forecast to gather to 105 before a cooler change and half an inch of rain over Monday and Tuesday.

February is generally our hottest month and normally the time of the year that the bushfires run wild., but they can occur from late December to early March.

That's interesting. When I first glanced at the map I thought it would be cooler there. Looked again, and I see you're at about 38 degrees south. I'm at 39 degrees north, so fairly similar. It's relatively rare to see temps over 100 here -- maybe a couple times a summer.
