New Years Dinner.

Not really willing to eat traditional ham blackeyed peas and cooked cabbage for dinner.
Going to fry up some shrimp and fish along with coleslaw and extra crispy crunchy French fries.
Maybe I'll eat a wee little piece of ham and swallow a blackeyed pea whole.
Coleslaw covers the cabbage.
Had the blackeyed peas covered some time ago.
This time of year if you look too late the shelves are empty of blackeyed peas.
Maybe better yet I can just make a wee kettle of them with a little ham.
Just enough for one serving.

I guess that must be what you are supposed to eat for good luck in Texas. In my area it's pork and sauerkraut. I don't like sauerkraut and I fail to see how any food can cause luck in your future but I will eat a bite of sauerkraut just in case. Considering how 2020 was I don't want to take a chance on missing out on good luck

My mom only ate a spoonful of black eyed peas on January 1, 2020 and we all see how well that turned out! This new year’s day, she insisting on eating a bucketful, hopefully with much better results for 2021.

My wife and I have black eyed peas, along with onions and a smoked hamhock, in the crockpot. Cabbage will get cooked down with some bacon later.

I didn't even know that was a thing, eating for luck! But I have to say, homemade fermented sauerkraut is worlds better than canned, so you **might** like it for next year. ;)

I have homemade fermented sauerkraut on hand at all times.
The 2 week ferment is about like a deli dill pickle.
Not nearly as sour as the long fermented stuff.

Black eyed peas with ham hock cooking, can of collard greens set aside for supper and I will make homemade cornbread for our meal... Yep brownrexx it is a traditional southern meal for New Years day. Black eyed peas for jingling change, Collard greens for folding money, cornbread for gold teeth is how one person put it. IE luck and prosperity.

I make my own sauerkraut from my home grown, organic cabbages and DH raves about how good it is but I still don't like it. I do rinse it but it is still very salty tasting to me and I really don't like salty foods much.

The shrimp was about as big as the palm of my hand.
New to me method of frying them.
Fried till they floated and just a little more and pulled out to cool.
Meat was very juicy and tender not over cook by any stretch of the imagination.
Shrimp was deveined washed and rinsed till water was clean and left to soak in salt water.
Dipped in the shrimp fry water batter mix then dredged in the dry shrimp fry mix.
Got the idea on line I think from the Louisiana shrimp fry site not for sure.
May very well be some of the best I have had.
Texas gulf wild caught too.

Shrimp fish coleslaw with cabbage carrots and purple sweet potato.
Blackeyed peas with ham.
No room for French fries.

Catfish going back to regular dry cornmeal.
Not the right kind of fish for anything else in my opinion.
I have one intake window open and two exhaust windows open to get rid of the fried fish smell.
I have been up since the crack of dawn and beat.
Smokey the cat is meowing for me to go to the bedroom.
She really is.

i made a pretty big pot of good hamburger soup. seems to be the
favorite soup for wife, and son. we did the bone broth the day before
in the pressure cooker. it makes for a good rich stock. i get the bones
in bulk from the local feed, and seed. he raises cattle on the side. he
sells them to me at his cost to process the beef, 50 cents a lb. i buy as
much as i can fit in the freezer. he is a good guy.

I forgot all about lucky foods today. I got out some frozen pizza, heated it up and cut into rectangles so it would cool quicker. I guess the goldest part were the squiggles of yellow pepper... ah, it's obvious to me, I ate the food that looks most like a credit card!  They stopped taking cash in 2020... what can I do? :P
