There will be plenty of free versions to play instead, there are already lots for different languages.
Here's one where you can change the number of letters in the word, up to 11

Another where you solve two words at a time

And here's one for maths

I had to 'cheat' for the 1st time to get today's by trying different combos on google.
Maybe I would have gotten it if I had waited till later in the day? That often happens.

The last couple have been harder I think. Haven’t tried today’s yet but I will tonight. I don’t give up. Sometimes I will leave it for a while and come back. Sometimes do that a few times. A couple I never got because there were too many possibilities and I didn’t pick the correct one.

Why does that link resolve to the NY Times?
I remember this game from long ago. Before computers. I don't remember it having a particular name, or the 6 tries, or the 5 letter limit.

The game was created by someone for someone else. They put it on the internet, the game took off, and the NY TImes recently bought it from the creator for millions of dollars.

I remember it as being a two person game. Maybe exercise is a better word. Pen and paper. Desks pushed head to head. You each make up a word, write it on the bottom of your paper, and fold it up so to hide it. You guess the other's word. They mark your's, you mark their's. I think it was underline to lock it in place, a circle for a letter in the wrong spot.
This was elementary school, so the words weren't real tricky. A 9 letter noun was about guaranteed to be "xylophone". Teacher picked the number of letters. That was half the learning I suppose, coming up with an 8 letter noun or 6 letter verb.
It might have been in beep or something, not regular class. Or by reading group.

I think that "Hangman" was a word guessing game too wasn't it?

There have a lot of word guessing games, they are not all the same. I played hangman. This is a new game.

I love Wordle and have a knock off game so I can play more than once a day. Just got my husband hooked on it.
I'm working on Quordle now - 4 words with 9 guesses total. I've gotten 3 out of 4 these first 3 days.... want that 4th word!

Yes I have done that before too. No, not a common word, I agree.

1the last archive went away and I wonder if that one will too. I bet the NY times has a first rate legal dept and copyright to the game, considering they paid 1 mil+ for it.

Depending on when the NYT wants to start charging for Wordle, I just might pay for a subscription to the game page. I looked at their game page and it's got some items I may be interested in.

Not that any of us on Tomato Junction would ever complain that a Wordle word was too difficult or arcane...
There has been pushback on the internet against the game recently having a few puzzles that were too difficult to solve. I read an article that stated the game was stacked against millennials.
What is the point of playing a game if the game can never beat you?
