Bower, that's so pretty around your place! Yeah, I know you're not thrilled about the shoveling part but from a purely aesthetic standpoint, it's beautiful! I wouldn't mind some snow here. Fat chance.
We're headed into another warm spell with five days in the low-mid 70's coming up. It's not unheard of and it seems that every third or fourth year it happens in January. I just checked my weather data. In January 2017 we had a ten day stretch of 70's. That made me then check February data for 2017 and sure enough, there were 16 days with highs in the 70's before returning to a normal March. I just might be able to repeat last year's growing schedule where I took a chance and pushed the planting window forward a bit more.
Wild daffies are up 2" out in the yard.

Ooh GoDawgs, can't wait to see your daffies!

I don't mind the snow, and I do enjoy the look. And I'm grateful that the garlic is well covered this winter for a change. And all the perennials - it's good for the garden.

They're just now peeking up. The whole area where they're coming up is about 3' x 6' so the pic is just a section. I've put flags at the corners of the patch so I don't walk over them. That reminds me I need to check spots where I've actually planted dafs. Some years back when I was planting dafs I only ordered fragrant ones.

Some of that snow would be useful over large parts of this country now. Weather here has cooled down over the last couple of days, but Friday is expected to be hot and windy, a bad fire day coming up with the fires still going in so many places

Whwoz I'd love to toss you a bit of our snow.
I heard about the Indian dipole on the news the other day, which explained the link between fire in Aussie and floods in Kenya. Just now reading it finally has shifted to neutral, and Blake is on the way, hopefully soon followed by Claudia, etc. Our hurricane season up here is not usually welcome, but I can understand that a monsoon is a good thing if it's bringing moisture you desperately need.

Here's hoping that the monsoons pile right onto you guys and put the fires out!!

@Bower, the Indian Ocean Dipole going to neutral is definitely a step in the right direction, but a long way to go. We in the south east of Australia often do not get a lot out cyclones up in the North West of Oz. Would like to see a couple form off the South East of Queensland and run down the east coast, do not necessarily need to develop into full blown cyclones, just tropical depressions would provide the necessary rainfall without the damaging winds associated with a cyclone. Rainfall really needs to be gentle to prevent soil and ash from washing into rivers. With the fire intensity experienced can burn roots to a depth of 15 to 20 cm

PJ, we've got a forecasted stretch of 70's coming too but yours changes to 80's later where we're staying mid 70's. It was 31 this morning with frost and will get up to 66 today. Those 70's begin tomorrow.
BTW, I love your Heinlein quote. SO true!

It's in the 60's right now and going to stay that way for about the next 5 days then the highs will be in the upper-40's to mid-50's and rain for the rest of the 2-week period weather.com has listed. Yeah, my daffs that we planted last fall are up anywhere from 1" - 3" so I might dump another bag of mulch over them just before it freezes again, which we know will happen. If we survive Saturday - we are under the gun for probable tornadoes. Yikes!

It's raining lightly here in KC right now but the line of freezing rain and sleet is less than 50 miles to the north and west. It's not supposed to reach here until evening but I'm skeptical that it will wait that long. I'm ready to skip out of work at the first sign. I'm not driving 40 miles home on an ice rink!
It'll turn to snow sometime overnight with 3-6" called for by Saturday night. Mid 30 with a chance of flurries for the Chiefs vs. Texans game on Sunday. I'm all stocked up on beer, wings, brats, and chips for the game. Oh and a fresh fifth of Crown Royal for touchdown shots

We had a snow-rain-snow event yesterday overnight that left a crust, followed by high winds and then dropped to -13C/8F overnight, windchills this morning -25C/-13 F. Sun is shining for the first time in weeks but nothing melting today. Forecast tomorrow above zero and rain likely Saturday night. I'm just glad the plants are well covered with snow. Crust was good to walk on yesterday, hope you all stay off the roads if anything gets slippery.

Drizzle followed by freezing drizzle flooded by rain flooded by freezing rain followed by wintery mix followed by snow, between 1 and 3 inches. Then comes the cold and winds. Good weekend to stay inside and decide on next year's tomato varieties.

It looks like the "January thaw" is about to hit, here, with Sat & Sun in the 60's.

Batten down the hatches furl the mains sails and bring out the storm jib mates, 'we're in for a blow.

Looks like real winter arrives here tomorrow night with -6C forecast and cold (-) days ahead. Garlic will get the cold it needs. Pots of plants have been snugged against each other and more pots in the patio are put on the floor. A light bulb in a metal holder goes on in the garage near some plants stored there and maybe even a heater for the worst of it. Winter comes, sooner or later.

The storm just passed through here. It wasn't as bad here as some surrounding areas, 2 TV stations went out and minor damage reported in a few areas. Lake Charles weather radar is out and Houston is sending radar to Lafayette along with New Orleans. It's moving fast, 35-45 mph with gust up to 60. 12K power outages reported and more expected.
It's heading east, Ya'll buckle up!!
