Re: How's your weather?
The first storm missed by about 10 miles, with 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail.
The next one, due in less than an hour, looks like it is headed straight at me. Time to dig out the battery powered lantern, and batteries, just in case.

Hot & humid! I’ve had to water more in the last week than all summer, which is to say I’ve watered twice! We’re supposed to get some rain tonight according to the weather guessers. All I can say is: I feel sorry for the construction guys across the street! Yikes! It’s 85F at 9PM and I’m just grateful that I have central air! Also grateful for shorts & tees. This is not a time for the Victorian dresses my grandpa’s sisters wore!

Re: How's your weather?
Humidity has gone way up here again, yet no rain has come with it! Got down to 69° last night, but 95% humidity, so everything was wet when I got up, so that gives the plants a little water. Heat index supposed to be around 100°, and up to 105° tomorrow, or a couple more, according to some, with a temperature of 96 or 97° (been a few weeks since this kind of stuff!). Then Thursday, the forecast high is 77°!! Thunderstorms are forecast for tonight and tomorrow, but, as usual, I'm not turning off my timers.
And when are they going to factor that wind into the "feels like" temp? We all know this makes a big difference! Today I went out for about 5 minutes, and there wasn't a leaf moving in the trees, and the Heat Index was already up to 92°, but it really felt a lot worse! But I remember several times the HI was up to around 100°, and one time close to 105°, but the wind was up between 30 and 40 mph, and it didn't feel as bad! That day I harvested all of my garlic was one of those, that I did, because a storm was coming (supposedly), and I didn't want it to be flooded, which, of course, didn't happen, since I harvested.

typical U.P. extreme weather change.
yesterday high 80s, mighta hit 90 with a heat index of 98. i was outside for a bit
and paid for it. today, low 60s, a lot of rain including an intense storm cell that really
let it rip. it will be back into the 70s for a few days. summer is slipping away on us.

Re: How's your weather?
The HI "only" got to 103° here today (not like some of those horrible ones I've seen listed elsewhere), with with a high of 96°, so the humidity wasn't super high - only 44%, and later even lower. Possible rain keeps getting pushed later, but again, I'm not turning off my timers. I only went out to harvest those chives, and much earlier, the okra, out front, but I'd rather work when it's cooler out there!

Record highs in the DC area today -- National Airport 101 degrees, beating the old record of 99; Dulles Airport 99 degrees, also a record for the day but I don't know what the previous record was. Humidity wasn't bad but it still felt like an oven out on the asphalt when I had to go to the grocery store this afternoon. They're promising some rain by the weekend, and then much cooler temperatures and some pleasant, early-fall type weather next week.

More heat after a week of 80's means reacclimating! Yesterday 95 with 104 heat index. Yesterday was also Day 17 with no rain. Trees are dropping leaves here and there. Another cool spell on the way next Tuesday and maybe a little rain. We'll see.

Re: How's your weather?
After hurricane Beryl came through last month, resulting in our being without power for 6 days, my husband decided that this was the last time he was going to be at the mercy of tropical systems blowing through. It was so hot and humid that the tile floors sweat. He had people come over and give an estimate for the purchase and installation of a whole home generator.
A lot of people must have had the same thought because the earliest that they could install the generator was at the end of the year. (It's a seller's market).
We were prepared for the cost of the generator itself, (he was interested in a brand that was a step up from Generac), but what was surprising was how much the labor would cost to install the system. An underground pipeline has to be installed from the generator to the house to transport the natural gas used to fuel the generator. It was going to be a somewhat lengthy pipeline because my husband did not want the generator itself to be subject to any large tree or tree branches falling on it. He got back with the estimator and they are reworking the installation amount. So we'll see what happens.

Re: How's your weather?
My folks have a Generac whole house natural gas fired generator. I think Kohler is the step up. Maybe there are more players. Generac uses a mitsubishi car engine. Kohler uses a Toyota. The Mitsubishi runs at a much higher RRM than the Toyota engine, I think that’s the main dig on the Generac system.SpookyShoe wrote: ↑Thu Aug 29, 2024 7:52 pm After hurricane Beryl came through last month, resulting in our being without power for 6 days, my husband decided that this was the last time he was going to be at the mercy of tropical systems blowing through. My folk’s Generac worked flawlessly during Beryl. Power went out early Monday morning and was restored late Friday afternoon. My wife and I lived in comfort in my folk’s home the whole time thanks to the Generac, my parents being out of town.
They got the generac before Hurricane Ike. It didn’t work so well after that storm. I had to go miles away to an auto parts store and find several belts to keep it running, the belts kept breaking. The Generac people reworked the setup and now there’s a maintenance deal with them. The belt issue was resolved.
I did shut the generator down for 15 minutes Thursday after the hurricane to check the oil. Added about 1/2 quart. Didn’t want to lose it during the middle of the night. My folks generator used about $300 worth of Natural gas during those five days. Their normal summer monthly electricity bill is typically around $450.
The generator helped keeps us be slightly less insane after Beryl. Our other neighbor has a ginormous diesel generator for their ginormous home. The trouble with the diesel one was getting to it when it needed refueling. So many trees were down, the path to the generator was blocked, plus the yard was exceptionally soggy with the ceaseless rains. That neighbor offered to allow us to tap into their generator for future storms, an electrician would be required at our expense to do the work, but they had some other issues with the generator. I’d be fine without a generator and just suck it up, but they are nice to get comfortable. Our house uses a well for water so no power, no water, no toliets. That’s not particularly sustainable in the long term.

Re: How's your weather?
I have the same issue of no well water when power is down. I keep a lot of containers of water for those emergencies, which for us are mostly in the winter, but wow, having a few in the summer is an eye opener. Much bigger deal having no water for the tomatoes and no fans in the greenhouse. $300 for 5 days power is a shocking expense all the same. I've heard you can run your house electricity off a good EV or hybrid vehicle, but I doubt that EV battery would last 5 days all the same. At least the hybrid you could gas up.
We have a beautiful forecast for the Labor Day weekend, nominally 22-24C highs and only getting cloudy on Monday afternoon, which will make for a better drive home for folks who are going out of town.

Re: How's your weather?
Been crazy here Down Under, high temperatures across the North of Oz, lots of cold fronts coming up from Antarctica down south. Net result is some windy, stormy weather, not as bad as with the front in February, but still 160,000 plus households lost power. We have been without power for 36 hrs so far, freezers holding well. Only real issues are low temperature around 10-12C/50-53F, so house is cold, nothing an extra layer can't fix and a lack of hot water for showers and washing up.

Re: How's your weather?
Beneficial rains here. Weirdly, local rainfall estimates recently have been grossly exaggerated on the official site, by many multiples. Actual readings and records from here at the local airport (and my own gauge) are far, far below the “official” estimates. But, today, we actually got some soaking rainfall. We’ve barely had enough rain to keep from having to add much additional water to the garden, but just barely.
Late this week, a fall-like cool down is expected, well ahead of schedule. Low 60s at night, low 80s during the day. That’s more typical of mid October weather for here.
Our summer has been relatively cool, especially as compared to last summer. Other than the horrible damaging hurricane and endless rain in July, it was a good summer for weather. Decent and normal June, Abysmal, horrible July, decent and normal August. Glad it’s September.

Still very dry here; Day 24 without rain. We came close yesterday. There were storms all around us but no rain here, just the empty promises of thunder. A front starts moving through today bringing wind all day today and tomorrow. Maybe some rain by Thursday.

Re: How's your weather?
Cats and dogs here today. If anyone decided to extend the long weekend into Tuesday, they're regretting it now in a tent! I went out earlier in the rain and picked most of the blushing tomatoes, some cracking already then, and there's a ton more coming down.. oh well.
No complaints about the summer. It was dryer than last year, not as humid. Starting tomatoes later worked out pretty well. My greenhouse crop is pretty much in, and with regular TLC the plants that were falling to rot as soon as they ripened a first fruit last year, are finishing off their main crop without going down. The timing is just right as well, as I like to clue up the tomatoes by early september, I can start doing that any time now.

Days are getting shorter. I actually like day light saving if they just keep it and don't switch back. I really dread when that happen.
