Tornado is one of the favorite items on the list of "we don't have it here". Things we do without entirely! Hail is another one. Snakes, scorpions, tarantulas. And they wonder why we like it up north.

They showed "pyro-cumulonimbus clouds" that start with the smoke and updraft and turn into lightning storms to boot. Yow.

I'm a BIG Weather Channel junkie, and yes, TORCON is a thing down here...if I remember correctly, leading up to the Super Outbreak in 2011, the TORCON was a 7 or 8....
The news and pictures coming out of Australia are truly heartbreaking....

Tuesday was just a lovely day. I was out walking in thunder, lightning, lots of pea-sized hail, and the occasional 1" hail, for about 10 minutes. Captain Hook kept his head down, and his hooks in his pockets to avoid any more injuries.

Sheesh! All we had was snow, ice pellets, freezing fog and rain for new years day. Above freezing today. Went to shop for supplies, took mother out for a parcel pickup. First day out since Christmas Eve! The whole holidays was like a mini-february. Mind your hooks and wear a helmet, Cap'n!

@Bower, @goodliest yes the pictures are hard to comprehend, even for us and we are used to fires, just not on the scale and speed of these! Fires so far have burnt out over 10 million acres. Most of this is bush which has not burnt for far too long, however some is rainforest of varying types and may not fully recover

Big storm has started here, to wrap up the holiday season in one word: snow!
This one is going to drop 40 cm of the white stuff, but the wind will have a say how that gets piled about. Peaking overnight at 70 kph gusting 100 kph (40+ mph gusting over 60 mph) from the north and continuing to howl into the morning hours tomorrow aka Old Christmas Day. Will be a holiday for everyone here, that's for sure. We'll be shovelling for days after!

Bower, you sure have had your share of shoveling snow lately. Here you are getting hit again. I'm glad to hear that you got out and now have some food in the house and have your Mom covered too. Stay warm.

Warmer than normal here, drier too. I am always concerned about drought after we went through about 8 years of it and almost had no drinking water left in the lakes. In the 50 and 60's for highs here, may be starting plants soon as I am leaning to guessing this will be a year with a 2 day spring, and a hot summer.

I'm just waiting for the snow to stop to go out and continue the shoveling I started yesterday. Local weather pundits say it's the most snow we've had in the Christmas season for 80 years. It is certainly plenty. Two hours yesterday just to make a dent in it and set up places to push the snow. I'll finish the end of the driveway today, so a vehicle can get at least part way in. Another 10 cm expected tomorrow and changing to rain at the end, which is going to make it heavy. Such is winter!

Wow! That is some snow! I haven't seen snow like that here in over 35 years, when my daughter was an infant. And I hope to never again. Looks like you could use a snowblower or two...

That sure is a big load of snow. Shoveling that will keep you fit and trim if it doesn't do you in first. How long is that driveway of yours? Do you do it by hand or a snowblower?

I don't have a snowblower. The push shovel is my secret weapon. Shoveling becomes dangerous because it uses so many muscles in the chest, at the same time your heart is wanting extra oxygen. Or something like that. My trick is to keep lifting to a minimum and build in "release time" for those chest muscles after the lift. I fill up the shovel by pushing it, then I slide it back to where I want the snow to go. Small lift to the top of the bank and release. Then slide it over the bank to shake the snow off as far from the road as I can get it. I do my best to never let the bank get piled up high right next to the road. There is nothing worse than trying to throw shovelfuls of snow up onto a high bank. Better take the time to make a 'chute' where you can eject snow at about the length of your shovel.
That being said, it's way too much snow at one time. Just put in 1.5 hours and have fully cleared 50 ft of driveway from the road. It is about 100 ft in all. Will do a bit more after a rest and a glass of water.

Here is the first 50 ft done to the end, and what was left to do, and how far I got before I quit. about 100 ft X 2 ft deep X ?8 ft wide is 1600 cubic feet of snow. Counting yesterday 2 hrs, today 2.5 so 4.5 hours in total, that is hmmm Bout 355 cubic feet of snow per hour hahaha. I think that must be pretty slow. No worries, it's good enough.

Well at least you don't have to climb on your home's roof to move off heavy accumulations, as the slope seems steep enough. You definitely have your work cut out for you...be careful, you wouldn't want to take a fall and no one around to know about it.
