A Descent into the Maelström.
Yes the story by Edgar Allen Poe.

Or at least that's what it reminded me of sitting at the edge of the the front that came rolling in this morning.

Rather Juicy the air is this morning. Drier air to the rescue this afternoon. Might get a brief storm in between. High 60°s for the weekend, then a little warmer next week.

Yesterday, a day w/o rain, and today, a second day in a row, this time with sun! Finally! Supposed to get to 58°, but 50° high the next 3 days. Over 1¼" rain Wednesday, and now they are predicting at least that much again tomorrow, followed by a clear day Sunday, but with 40-50 mph wind gusts. I won't be doing much outside this weekend!

@karstopography The heaviest snow I ever experienced was 16''(41cm) here in Southern Colorado and a small town near the mountains southwest of here reported almost 60"(142cm). Fortunately conditions are rarely perfect for that kind of storm.

I don’t really know or remember the heaviest at one time snowfalls. There were a couple of good ones when I lived in New England. I was in South Dakota for a couple and I’ve been in the mountain west when some pretty good dumps happened.
@pondgardener when I got lost in the snow was in the South San Juan Mountains just west of the continental divide and a few miles north of the New Mexico border. At the time, my folks had a cabin at about 8,600’ asl there that was bordering the National Forest on two sides and I was out in the national forest hunting, maybe only a mile or so from the cabin. The snow hit hard and fast and I thought I’ll just follow my tracks back home, but that’s not a very good plan in heavy snow. I soon figured out I was walking in circles and getting nowhere fast. A moment of panic ensued, but I sat down and got a grip and started to think about what to do. Option one was to follow the creek downhill to where I knew it in a few miles intersected a public road. Option two was to realize that the storm blew in from the west and that was the direction of the cabin and if I keep the wind in my face I’ll make it back, that is if the wind hadn’t switched directions. I took option two and by gosh it worked.

People used to get lost in the forest all the time where I grew up.
We thought it was hilarious since we knew the area like the back of our hand.

One time in the middle of the night I walked through the forest from my house to the house on the other side of the mountain covered in snow.
Dark as pitch.
Two girls I was visiting.
My house was the top one and that's the route I took.

Cold (low 40s F/low 4s C) rain all day...a nice slow soaker....6"/1.5cms so far...but calm; a wind whipping this would make it prit' 'near uncomfortable!
10°F/5.6°C cooler & we'd have ourselves a Snow Event.

Temperature soared today to 85°, well above the forecast. Still 75° at almost 7pm. Forecast has it at 53° before dawn Saturday.

Supposed to be 50 mph gust Sunday/Monday. This why I never think it is worthwhile to try to get a greenhouse up early.

Weather stations in St. John's reporting 70 - 77.5 cm. Closest station here is Paradise, so we'll see. We tend to get extra.
I shoveled off the landing yesterday afternoon, which was a good thing.
I'm not sure that parking the car further out the driveway is going to make much difference. It's going to take some work just to get close to it...

51° now, going to 64° definitely a new cooler airmass is asserting itself. Gusting to 30 mph. Had to go out and secure a few tomato plants even though I thought I had done a good job getting ready for a blow. The bottom appears to be 46° overnight which isn’t too harmful.

Well this is ridiculous - say you wanted to go dig a swimming pool in your back yard.
It will take days (yeah multiple swimming pools), I'm almost tempted to just wait for spring.
Three hours to get to the back of the car. Just a warmup for tomorrow.

Got another 1 3/8" of rain yesterday, and it didn't stop until close to midnight, and about 7:30 pm I started hearing thunder! Today is very sunny, but also very windy - I went out to bring in some trays and other planting things from the shed, and I could barely get them to the back door, without getting them blown out of my arms! Tomorrow isn't supposed to be much better, but the week is supposed to start getting much warmer, getting our first 70+ days of the year. We'll see if it happens...
And now I see it rained again, briefly, with the sun out still - sort of like a sunshower down south!

We have a rainfall warning for tomorrow night, about 35 mm expected, and high wind warning too.
Will be a mess on top of the snow.

"Freight train" wind gusts, 50+ mph, overnight and expected throughout today. That's the noise they make when approaching. They start out faint, and about 10 seconds later, their roar is here. We rarely get strong winds when all of the trees are leafed-out. But when thy are barren, like now...

Epic shoveling, until it started to rain. So disappointed when I finally got to the end, to see that the road is a mess, my side is not plowed at all, snowmobiles of course have been tracking over that into the woods - no way I was going to try and shovel that hard packed trail. Plow left streals of snowballs all over the street up to 3 ft high, this stuff evidently falling out the sides of the overfull plow. And left it, snow piled high on every side of the road as well. So every place and everyone here is still dealing with mega snow.
As for the rain, it's been upped to 40-45 mm between and now and midday tomorrow.
I'm happy for the forest, but... you know I like it best 20 cm at a time.
Just hoping the rain can get into the ground most everywhere and not pool up too much.

I just went out to check out the wind situation, and it doesn't seem to have let up at all! And already I see some things people have put out for the trash being "rearranged", so maybe I'll wait - fortunately, I can skip a week, with not much notice, with trash or recyclables.
