It hatched!!
I watched it for hours and it did nothing. I even thought it might be dead. So I go into the house to take a shower. I come back out and the thing has just hatched. It's hanging upside down now on a stem of parsley drying its wings. It's a beauty.

Re: Chrysalis
Oh, sorry you missed it, rare for them to hatch this late. It looks quite perfect. I think it's my fault you left to shower. I'm so sorry.

Re: Chrysalis
It's attached to a board on the wooden fence. Right by its host plant the passion vine.

Re: Chrysalis
Looks like some big fat bug is eating whatever was in the chrysalis?

Re: Chrysalis
No, the chrysalis of the Gulf Coast fritillary butterfly actually is that ugly looking.

Very cool! I hope you’re lucky enough to see it emerge.

Re: Chrysalis
I planted two or three passion vines and these things came out of nowhere and ate the vines to the ground.
The caterpillars are totally harmless to humans they dont sting but look like they will.
I'll take the butterfly vines I have, nothing seems to bother them.

You might as well be arguing with a cat.

Re: Chrysalis
I found two today. One underneath the shed and another on the lip of a potted plant. I'll be watching both of them.

A small package of jewels. They are so beautiful adorned with gold trimming.

Re: Chrysalis
The butterfly hatched while I was out to lunch (literally). It's at the bottom of the post drying its wings. It can't fly yet.
It will take 30 minutes to 2 hours for the wings to dry.

Re: Chrysalis
She looks so healthy and pretty. Alot of them aren't in good shape and dont "form" well when they emerge, and some don't emerge.I read it was only about 1 in 10 that forms and makes it adulthood.

I knew there was a reason why I was concerned about flying on monarch airlines back in the day....that and Dan Dare Airways....

Re: Chrysalis
A second Chrysalis eclosed this morning. I was prepared for it and watched the whole thing.
