Overall, coffee seems more beneficial to health than harmful. For many coffee and tea drinkers, these beverages are the largest source of antioxidants in their diets.

I surprised there aren’t coffee pills for health like there are garlic pills for health for people that aren’t garlic eaters.
Just my own theory, but when consuming coffee from freshly ground beans, I can see the oily residue it leaves behind. Ground coffee doesn't do that, and I think it is because those oils have dried out and oxidized, likely destroying a good amount of the antioxidants.

I've heard of the guideline that coffee is good for 2 months after being roasted, 2 days after being ground, and 2 hours after being brewed.

I saw a guy throw away a brand new bag of 60 dollar coffee beans because someone opened them wrong.

If course the oil company paid for them.
Talk about entitled.

I buy a 900 g sealed package or tin of ground coffee, which is noticeably fresh when first opened. You don't get the same whiff of fresh volatiles when you open the package for the last cup two weeks later. It's still a decent coffee but...
I'm sure grinding it fresh is addictive... ;)

I buy whole bean coffee (Eight O'Clock) and grind it myself every morning in the trusty old Mr. Coffee machine. Just plain black coffee. Good stuff. Even though I use a coffee scoop to measure the beans every day, some days it tastes better than others. I suppose I should experiment by weighing the beans, the water and the time I grind them until I find the exact brew I want but I don't have the time for all of that.

But I do check the beans in each scoop to see if there are any quakers and remove them if so. Quakers are unripe beans that slipped through the inspection process of the initial green coffee beans pre-roasting. They're a lot lighter in color and will add an off taste to the pot. The coffee I use rarely has any in there.

If any coffee is left over I'll either add a few ice cubes later in the day or reheat it in the microwave.

Years ago I was going to buy a really expensive grinder.
A conical burr mill grinder.
But never did.
I bought the blade grinder and the grind isn't consistent.
The flat mill grinder I bought wasn't any better and both are now spice grinders.
I was looking into spending way too much money for a cup of coffee.
Like well over a thousand dollars or even more for grinder and espresso machine.
What put me back to my senses was I watched a woman toss out a pod she had ground because it had set for over 1 minute while she was talking.
Okay I thought to myself this is ridiculous.
A Texas Hillbilly Cactus Jumper sitting barefoot in his underwear on a computer considering spending 2 thousand dollars to make a darn cup of coffee.
Something didn't add up.

My brother has got super into coffee, he's a bit obsessed with getting the perfect grind. The amount of money he spends on equipment...

Good coffee doesn’t have to be expensive. $15 grinder, $20 pour over coffee pot, coffee beans, kettle.

Can’t go back to pre-ground or drip makers again. Takes a little more effort, but tastes so much better.

My coffee I’m using at the moment, whole bean Lavazza Super Crema, costs $22 for a kilo, or a penny a gram. I might use 16 or 20 pennies worth per two shots. I use about 10 cents worth of milk per two shots. 30 cents total/double shot, Starbucks grande cappuccino equivalent, actually superior to their coffee.

What’s a Grande Cappuccino cost at Starbucks these days? North of $5 isn’t it? In 100 days, I’ve saved $500 over the Starbucks version. In a year it is more than a $1,500 savings. In less than a year, I’ve paid for my $865 Rancilio Silva Espresso maker and the $400 Rancilio Rocky Grinder.

I’ve had both of my machines for well over 13 years. Call it a savings of over $15,000 for that time period to be conservative.

Penny Wise, pound foolish type of deal.

I use a blade type grinder made by Braun to grind my beans and it does a great job. Good reliable German equipment. I've had it for years. One day it slipped out of my hands and took a header to the floor. The top of the button you press to make it work broke off but there was enough left of it that clamping a bulldog clip to the remaining piece worked great as a replacement for the broken off piece. That was about 8 years ago.

Just for fun, a couple of years ago I did some research on how much a replacement would cost. I paid about $25 for mine years ago (at least 15) and today I'd have to spend about $120! I was shocked.... and will make sure it takes no more headers!

I don't begrudge anyone for spending money on fancy coffee making equipment.
Lord knows I have a fortune tied up in sausage and meat processing equipment.
My grinder cost hundreds of dollars.
Stuffer too
I used to go to Starbucks religiously in the Anchorage airport in the morning.
In Seattle is was a Mom and pop or local place in the airport close to baggage claim in the morning before I went home.
One each a month coming and going.
I got the biggest cup of regular coffee they had.

I also have a stove top espresso maker or moka pot.
It works fantastic.
Sicilian friend sent it to me.

@GoDawgs I used to be a loyal Eight O’Clock bean buyer too. Used to be $8 on sale, but it’s gone to $25 a bag in the last year (and never on sale). I don’t know who’s buying it at those prices so had to switch to a store brand.

I might start grinding my own beans again.
It might taste like cumin for awhile but that wouldn't be all that bad.
It's a Cuisinart supreme grind burr mill grinder.
I love the HEB brand Texas pecan.

Just grind up some pecans in it first. You can use them to coat chicken or fish or something, it will clean out the cumin and the residual taste should go quite well with Texas Pecan coffee. :)

They actually sell cumin flavored coffee.
The best way I've found to clean the thing out is grind rice.
I did some modifications on it and it darn near makes flour now.

We get the 38 oz bag (used to be 40 oz...) at Sam's for $13.98 the last time we stocked up in October. We go to Sam's quarterly and it's about time for another run as the Sam's list is long enough and there's one bag of coffee left. Need to get three or four. :)

I recall the time we had a blizzard and nobody could leave the building.
So the coffee was being drank at an astounding rate.
I filled up the bunn coffee pot with 19 packets of Sanka and hot water and set it on the burner.
People sucked it up but you should have seen the faces they were making.
