Re: Purple Galaxy Tomato
I can see why for special variety with limited amount. MIgardener overall is super generous, I have helped start garden for several people thanks to their affordable seeds. You should be more concerned with F1 tomato seeds becoming overpriced. $1 per seed is getting to be normal at this rate as F1 become more and more popular and marketed. Of course youtubers are telling people the only correct way to grow tomato plants are single stem only and close together, so you need to buy more seeds, now you are selling 10 or 15 F1 tomato seeds for $8 that's a win.
[/quote]
I don't worry about any of that as I am amassing my own personal seed bank. I don't grew F1. I rarely grow out an F5. I wait until they are OP before growing them out and I save seeds. So that whole argument is completely obsolete with me. If you want to pay that much, have at it. I'll simply wait until they are put up for trade and I'll obtain them for the cost of a postage stamp. I did the same thing with MIGardener's seeds. I don't even think I used a stamp just for those, however. I think someone just wound up sending them to me. You do you.

It appears there will be no purple galaxy, at least not early in the year. Baker Creek is now saying production issues are making it unlikely that they will be able to offer it to their customers.

Ah the ol’ bait and switch! Sure was a pretty fruit for a catalog cover though…

Re: Purple Galaxy Tomato
I wasn’t wowed by the purple galaxy cover photo. I haven’t yet found a tomato with that type of internal structure that I like. Purple galaxy reminds me of a Moneymaker tomato in every way except color. Moneymaker was one of the least impressive or interesting tomatoes I’ve grown. If Purple Galaxy had the internal structure of some Beefsteak type such as Pruden’s Purple or SOTW then I might feel differently. Smallish or Saladette sized Tomatoes that are basically an outer wall of flesh the rest of it mostly gel and seeds are by far my least favorite type and that’s exactly what Purple Galaxy appears to be from the cover photo. The color doesn’t really matter.

I am more suspicious of this now that Baker Creek suddenly are saying that they are unlikely to be able to offer seeds to their customers (a vague statement that could be interpreted as they never will) after they put it on their catalogue cover.
I doubt they did it on purpose if it somehow does have the Snapdragon genes in it. They seem like a business with a strong anti-GMO kind of vibe. To pull it after so much hype raises questions though.

That is indeed suspicious. Was it all marketing shenanigan?

Re: Purple Galaxy Tomato
They blocked all discussion of it in the Baker Creek facebook group. All old posts about Purple Galaxy have also had comments turned off. They are basically expecting people to carry on as if the whole thing had never happened.
I understand things happen, but the lack of transparency isn’t a great look as far as I’m concerned. People are obviously disappointed and not allowing any conversations about it just doesn’t seem like the best approach.

Re: Purple Galaxy Tomato
I got an email today that “The Purple Tomato” by Norfolk is now available for purchase through their website. $20 for 10 seeds, only available for sale in the USA. They also make sure to mention that as far as they know, theirs is the only purple fleshed tomato and any others out there are “illegitimate”
I really don’t know what to make of it. Curiosity factor is there, but I don’t think I could ever justify paying two bucks a seed.

Re: Purple Galaxy Tomato
Interesting. The tomato was bred in Norfolk, UK, but as a UK citizen I can't buy the seeds. Possibly because they're GMO?

Re: Purple Galaxy Tomato
Yeah I see that Gmo tomato is on sale. But that is a different tomato to this one. This thread is about the open pollinated purple tomato being introduced by Baker Creek.rossomendblot wrote: ↑Sun Feb 04, 2024 4:38 am Interesting. edit: appearantly it is gmo

I don’t think it looks natural and am really not interested in this tomato. There are so many other fantastic tomatoes out there.

Lots of speculation over on Reddit about the two.

Baker Creek tomato doesn’t actually exist. Those pics and videos were all AI generated.

Re: Purple Galaxy Tomato
Link no longer work, product is not available. Seems like a PR disaster whatever the behind the scene is. But at this rate I'm not even going to buy any purple flesh tomato even if the claim is non-gmo, just too suspect and risky.
