Re: Cheap Eaten
I'm contemplating if this even qualifies as cheap, but I think yes because it's homemade.
I attempted to make baklava. The only hard part is making the phyllo, which I never attempted before, but after half a dozen ones it became easy and fun to do. My recipe is probably about 70% less sugar than typical.

Re: Cheap Eaten
I call this "spice nog". Local grassfed milk, chocolate, turmeric, cinnamon, and some sugar. Sorry if that's a bit weird, I feel more weird drinking eggs.

Not gonna do the raw egg thing either unless it is mayonnaise or calf slobbers.

Re: Cheap Eaten
Sue, bok choy is so versatile, as others posted yes stir fried, raw, roasted, steamed you name it. I like it boiled(chopped) directly into the pot as I cook instant ramen or other soupy dishes. It's a mild flavored veggie so anyone should like it.

Re: My Cheap Christmas Dinner.
It all started out with a Turkey on sale.
Then it was a pork but on sale.
Decided to cure and smoke them and they are in the oven on low finishing up as we speak.
They sat out in the smoker all night and as the fire burned down the weather was way cool enough for cured meat not to spoil.
Then I decided I needed cranberries so I made them as usual with less water more sugar with clove and cinnamon.
Put a cup of mayocoba beans on yesterday to soak for a few hows then started cooking them.
They sat out and continued cooking today.
Drained the water off and added V/8 juice, bacon, salt, brown sugar, Steens syrup, a whole yellow onion pinch of hot red pepper and molasses.
Yes baked beans for Christmas.
Got the offset smoker going again for Chappell Hill smoked garlic sausage rings for a slow cook.
Chappell Hill Sausage company a local meat company about 70 miles from me.
Last but not least making deviled eggs.
That should be enough with pecan pie for dessert.

Re: Cheap Eaten
How's that turkey taste? It looks like turkey ham from here. Did you use a glaze or was that from the sugar in the cure?
My favorite part of a ham is that outside layer with all the crusted glaze, like sweet cracklins!

Re: Cheap Eaten
Thanks,
The black skin is the result of smoke and the sugar.
Plus it is really hot from red pepper.
I enjoyed the cranberries and deviled eggs the most.
A result of being around a smoker for so long.
And I have had a cold since last weekend.
No real appetite.

Re: Cheap Eaten
Well I bet that good food will help with the cold! Pepper is great, hot and sour soup used to be a household favorite for anyone suffering a cold or flu. Smoke, sugar and pepper doesn't sound half bad either!

Re:Tamales
Brought eight large tamales to work today after many threatening comments if I didn't.
They got wolfed down in fast order by four people including me.

Re: Cheap Eaten
I made Tonkotsu Ramen for supper, it was slurpilicious!! I over cooked the egg but it was still good with Tare over it.
I cheated and used the pressure cooker for the broth and it saved a few hours, this is the way to go.

Re: Cheap Eaten
Inspired by the above, I made some minestrone today.
Bone broth as the stock. Beats, carrot, chickpea, mushroom, onions, beef. Top off with grated gouda.

Re: Cheap Eaten
While everyone is making lovely soups and such I had to eat this garbage.
The only thing that saved it was the sprinkling of chili powder on top.

Re: Cheap Eaten
It's okay Worth. It's better than I had for Christmas dinner, a vegan Holiday Roast with hazelnuts and cranberries. It was like having a very sweet meat loaf wrapped in pastry. Yuck. I had two bites, that was it, and the "roast" cost $22.00.

Re: Cheap Eaten
I saw a real prim rib roast at the store like I used to get for $30.00 and it cost $125.00.

What I mean by real prim rib is it still had the ribs on it.
