Been wondering, why our captain has such perceived disdain for black and/or purple toms… hmmmm…
only grows 1% or is it 0.001% out of the whole crop
and it appears that a lot of peeps like em…(e.g. Black Krim, Carbon, Paul Robeson, Margaret Curtain, etc)
hmmmm… gonna be in big big twouble...
wonder what his fav black tom is

Such brave sharks, so close to a scuba tank...
I finally figure out that the best way I could ever run a very large swap is if I was conjoined octopi, one creature with sixteen arms. That lasted all of a brief few moments, when I realized I'd be the smorgasbord.

Re: HELP: Any MUST GROW tomatoes suggestions
If I do the math, since Thanksgiving, 16 (arms of the conjoined octopi) X {5 (injuries) divided by 2 (real hands)} = 40 (injuries to the hypothetical conjoined octopi). You're correct.

Ahh, yes, close to a scuba tank, but the ravioli's are close to them too! I do so adore those big, fat, tasty ravioli's!!

If you want a fat one, beyond the Flamingos, swim on over to Houzz, Round Robin Exchange, 12th Annual Secret Santa Swap 2019, the list starts on December 26th and continues from there. The thread is 400+ posts, and you'll likely have to register in order to be able to reach where the lists are.
P.S. As of yesterday, the conjoined octopi is now up to a hypothetical 48 appendage injuries.

We're going to have to put the octopi in a padded aquarium for their own safety!

On the plus side, it was likely best to go through all of these accidents. Spring is coming, which means it will be time to dust off my arch enemy, the garden rake. With tines up, I've stepped on it three times in the past 15 years. I'm lucky that they were all three near misses. Captain Hook may start calling it Tick-Tock.

My favorite black tomato showed up in the garden this year. I don't yet know what it is. It was supposed to be Elgin Pink, but it wasn't. It may be something in the Purple Elgin family.TheDante wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2020 10:40 am Been wondering, why our captain has such perceived disdain for black and/or purple toms… hmmmm…

May I introduce what may be a bit of a panic for you? With 2,000+++++++++++++++++++++ varieties, when it comes time to start seeds, how do find the ones you want to sow?

Would you be able to know eventually what tomato variety that is? Or that you will give it a new name? hmmmm… how does ´The Tormented´ sound… LOL...Tormato wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2020 11:51 amMy favorite black tomato showed up in the garden this year. I am fairly safe there… have at least 3 comprehensive spreadsheets created.
Total Inventory columnised by
growth habit - determinate/indeterminate/dwarf
leaf type - RL/PL/rugose/wispy
colour
size
shape
flavour
variety - OP/heirloom
season-early/mid/late
origin - country
seed source
location -indoor/outdoor/both
remarks - e.g. cross between
Seed sources - variety and seed source
Varieties - so that I will be able to know how many actual varieties I have
and all the tomato seeds are stored according to the seed sources and the tomato varieties arranged alphabetically in every different seed sources - so I only need to check my spreadsheets for the particular variety that I am interested in and I will also be able to know which seed source/s that I have gotten from. And be able to look easily for that variety from that seed source/s as they have been organised alphabetically.

My panic would stem from should I plant the variety from all or some of the different seed sources. Whom can I safely ´rely´ on.

Re: HELP: Any MUST GROW tomatoes suggestions
I'll have to try to track down a few varieties that may be in this family, being Wild Thyme Purple, Horton Purple, and Purple Elgin. That would be after another year of trialing this tomato, for last year's flavor could easily disappear.
Any new name, if there is going be one, will likely start with Elbonian... maybe North Elbonian...
If you are going to have 2 plants of some varieties, and you have 2 sources, it's best to plant from both sources. In running my swap, I used to request that participants tell me their #1 wanted variety, and I'd send them seeds from 2 or more sources, if I had them. That was the original purpose of the swap many years ago, for people to locate that one most sought after variety that they were looking for. And then the swap got slightly...out...of...hand (or hook, currently).
My inventory is in my head. Unfortunately, it is not columnised. It might be colonized, but by what, I wouldn't know. And the seeds themselves, when it's time to plant, my spreadsheet would be to dump the packs out of their gallon buckets (I have about 20 buckets/categories), spread them out on a sheet on a bed, search for the few I want , while mostly planting whatever (as long as the whatevers are mostly pink beefsteaks and any color hearts).

So many of the hearts are so good for taste and many uses.

ok will do, think that is a sound compromise to plant from 2 sources.Tormato wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2020 2:29 pm I'll have to try to track down a few varieties that may be in this family, being Wild Thyme Purple, Horton Purple, and Purple Elgin. ha! some might brand me as a ´control fweak´ whilst you as ´spontaneous´.
And it appears that pinks and hearts are more popular with most too - that too will go into consideration =)

Re: HELP: Any MUST GROW tomatoes suggestions
The two source suggestion is a really good one.
If you grow a variety that doesn’t knock your socks off you may, to be fair,
want to trial it again another year. I think some people say to try a variety 3 times before deciding to exorcise.
But you make little progress on your grow list.
If you have two sources at least you can eliminate that variable of an off seed source.
If you have a list of 2000 varieties and somehow prioritize what to grow first , may I suggest that yellow pear be the last tomato to complete your quest.
(Another good one: Andrew Rahart’s Jumbo Red though I haven’t grown for several years. And did I mention Paul Robeson. Yes I did.)

Re: HELP: Any MUST GROW tomatoes suggestions
Yeah Elaine =( if only we have summer ALL YEAR round.. lol, then I should be able to grow toms continuously… but by then, I reckon my body will be screaming for winter rest!
Interestingly, toms are deemed to be ´perennials´, I guess that is also why Charles Wilber is able to grow such TALL plants, ever-reaching for the stars.. lol
I have Andrew Rahart´s Jumbo Red and Paul Robeson is on my grow list =)
I grew yellow pear many years ago, wasn´t impressed by the taste but by the adorable shape..lol and I have Beam´s Yellow Pear, not sure if it is the same as the one I grew before though.
