I think I would pick Yellow Brandywine, but I know some of you have much more experience with different varieties. What would you pick?

I love that! Making me laugh, such a great idea!

I'm looking through reviews of, Stump of the World, and wow! Might be to late to start for Central NY, but it's going in my garden next year.

Brandywine, Sudduth’s strain; or Cherokee Purple. I’m sure there are many others, and maybe better; but Brandywine Sudduth’s seems to be almost universally liked and Cherokee Purple seems to win the largest number of people to heirlooms.

Yellow Brandywine would also be an excellent choice. I think I got two when I grew it.

A store bought tomato and pretty much any home grown tomato. For me, it would be GGWT - Girl Girl Weird Thing.

Any difficult to grow older variety that will make a huge plant and just 3 or 4 fruit, which concentrates the sugars.

I think probably Ananas Noire, for the combination of different taste and very different looks. Or maybe a green-when-ripe, or a sweet, tasty bicolor like Pineapple or Oaxacan Jewel. And if "all tomatoes are the same" means "all tomatoes taste the same," Sungold is a great refutation.

I am doing this for my daughter's boyfriend this year when the tomatoes come in. He is vegan so you would think that he would know what his veggies taste like but being a city boy and eating only food from a store or restaurant he has no clue as to what fresh home grown veggies taste like. Last year I gave him a large bag of tomatoes to take home. He did not use a single one of them for a sandwich or a salad. He cooked them all. Come winter we were talking about home grown food and I asked him how the tomatoes were. They were fine just like the tomatoes from the store. I held my breath and said not a word.

This year when he comes over and the tomatoes are coming in, I am having him stay for dinner. I will buy a nice tomato from the store, another from the farmers market and then serve one of mine from the garden. I will do the same with beans and whatever else is coming in. I'm going to see if I can't get a light bulb to turn on. Hopefully he can taste the difference. My daughter hates tomatoes unless they are fresh from the garden and so do I.

My sister still says this after all the tomatoes I've grown. So she gets the blah tomatoes from my experiments that I don't care for.

I like your thinking. Have him do a taste test with a Walmart bargain bin tomato versus the best from your garden.

Your sister sounds like my wife. She prefers store bought to the Sun Golds and Black Cherries I grow.

I would point to the garden and tell them to pick what is ripe, bring into the house or even garage, cut a chunk out of whatever they have and do a taste test. We used to have testings in the area with seventy or more varieties. The differences are amazing. A store bought variety had never won best tasting tomato prizes. Even with a few spitters among the seventy, the differences were enough for every attendee to find something they liked.

It's not just tomatoes or vegetables.
My wife had real farm raised pork and bacon and found it strange tasting.
Many people don't care for the taste of good beef either.
The same with real butter.

Never heard of this one so off to google I go...it says:

"Recent variety resulting from the supposed crossing of 'Indian Stripe' and 'Daniel' which occurred at Bill Jeffers."

I think I'm going to start my list for next year, now. "Daniel Burson" sounds amazing!

Plants with Stories says"
"The plant is vigorous, with good production of beautiful dark purply fruit with green shoulders that go away when extremely ripe and very little cracking."

All the plus' we look for in a reliable tomato, thank you for sharing, PlainJane!
