Winter Hawaii 2022/23

Going to be doing the usual tomatoes in grow bags under the eaves of the house where I can control how much water they get. Also got bold and threw a bunch out in the garden, so we'll have to see how that works out. It is usually an exercise in futility, frustration, and septoria, but we shall see. Did a lot of cherries, they're usually slightly easier.

Also have some beans going, Thai Long Beans in both red (thanks @pepperhead212) and green, and some purple pod pole beans. Planning to start some more corn, and try broccolini, Chinese broccoli, some of those type things when they show up from Baker Creek. Then going to work on some soil building, cover cropping etc.

Well since @MissS put all that pressure on me… here are some more pics. Got some little Green Zebra Cherries, and Atomic Sunsets that set fruit. Also have a crop of corn that got real leggy, biggest are over nine feet tall and breaking in the wind. Then been mixing up potting mix for my eaves tomatoes and got them sprouted, they got real leggy before I had time to dig out the grow lights.

@zendog I’ve been meaning to thank you for the recommendation of Black Icicle. I grew it this summer, and growing it again this winter. One of my plants is like 15’ long, but still steadily pumping out perfect drying, sauce, or fresh fruit. The last pic in the post above is BI.

Some friends of mine lived in Hawaii for a couple of years. They commented on how difficult it was to grow tomatoes. Cherries being the saving grace, I guess because they mature more quickly and losses are easier to manage. So I've always been impressed with the variety of tomatoes you manage to grow. I guess over longer time span you've figured out what works!
Here's to a bountiful season of all the things you grow! It is a treat to see things flourishing when our gardens are buried in snow.

Might be where on Hawaii a garden is located and on which island and at what elevation above sea level that determines the potential for having tomatoes do well. I’ve been to Oahu and the Big Island and perhaps Honolulu is a little hotter, with the urban heat island effect, than some of the other spots. Waimea on the big island up at 3,000’ asl is cooler than the sea level spots. The big cold current coming down the Pacific coast on the US and Canada ends up veering towards Hawaii and modifies what might otherwise be a hotter climate based on latitude alone. The dewpoints in Hawaii tend to be a little lower than comparable latitudes in the Caribbean or Indian Ocean, thanks to the currents coming off and down the Pacific coast of North America. The ocean water off Hawaii never really gets as hot as the Caribbean or GOM at similar latitudes.

Little differences in dewpoints and nighttime lows seem to have big impacts on success with tomatoes.

It’s been rainy, tis the time of year when plants just up and die. Oh well. Got my first Red Thai beans going, some
Cherries about to come ripe, and just a few slicers to keep the fam happy.

Lots of rain, some wind, feels a lot like December. Had my 9’ sunflower finally come crashing down. Picking tomatoes right at breaker stage to try avoid splitting. Not much to report, but I will be getting broccoli and lettuce in the ground soon, really spice things up for my grow log

@Mark_Thompson I was worrying about you today when I heard about the eruption on the Big island... hope your air stays fresh there, not too many fumes. Hope you don't get any hazards out on the water either!
I just packed up those (late super late!) seeds for you this morning before I heard about the eruption, so I had to google and make sure you weren't in the line of fire! I have a work order to ship this week so they'll get mailed within a day or two.

@Bower Thanks for the concern, we’re all safe. My family over on the Big Island is looking good too. Wintertime is always tough in the harbor, some really good surf spots are actually inside the harbor, which tells you how protected it is No rush on those seeds, I’ll be making that a spring/summer project

Winter plants doing their thing. Got some lettuce in the gutters to avoid the slugs and bugs. Broccoli going, Yod Fa which is a Chinese broccoli I guess, and a variety called Rappini.
Oh and my chili pepper tree loading up for another good looking crop.

Nothing real exciting going on, some broccoli, finally killed one of my basil trees, maybe this tomato has my first F1 seeds inside, we shall see. Then a big batch of bananas going into the oven to dehydrate. Happy New Years all!
