It is always a crap shoot when you think there might be a double letter, but trying it uses an attempt and means that you don't get to find or eliminate another letter, lol. Maybe there is, maybe you are going to slap yourself up side the head...

Nail biter! When you can make so many words using two letters you pray hard you will hit the right one by 6!
By 5 had eliminated so many letters got a lucky guess! Definitely not a word I expected to find in the NYTimes word inventory but lately it’s been a real mixture!

Ya got that right, @pondgardner I'm out of ideas for now, but will wait a while and see if anything pops out later. I have only the same two letters as you to work with and too many discarded consonants.
