For the dreaded regular American hotdog I buy the cheapest money can buy at HEB.
Simply because I like them.

They honestly taste all the same to me.
After I pile on all the fixings you could probably just toss the wiener anyway.
Then there is the dreaded roller rubber dog.
They sit on the hot rollers until they somehow turn to rubber.
They had these in Prudhoe Bay Alaska in the spike room.
You could literally bite hard into them and you couldn't get your teeth through.
Your jaws would spring back.

The very best hot dogs I know of are Kunzler Beef Franks. Simmered in sauerkraut. Preferably on a potato roll bun.

But most hot dogs for me just get white bread and a stripe of gulden's spicy brown. I also have some canned pear relish that is really good on a hot dog too.

I knew one guy that was rather crude that said people were spoiled if they had to have a hotdog bun and a warm hotdog.

"ball park" hotdogs. Not Ball Park hotdogs, hot dogs you use to be able to buy, while sitting in your seat, at a baseball stadium. You know, the guy walking around with the steam box yelling "HOT DOGS..get your HOT DOGS..HOT DOGS here". I have no idea what kind they were or who made the buns, but gosh, they were GOOD! I'd eat 'em by the handful lol.

Re: What do you like on your hotdogs?
Ball park hot dogs, "franks" at Fenway, are likely as varied as the parks/stadiums in which they are consumed. At Fenway, they have changed vendors a few times in the 50 years that I've been going. Even the new contractor (Kayem) has changed the recipe and method of cooking. They've gone from straight boiling to boiling and then very lightly grilling. I, of course, would ask for a frank with the lightest of the light grilling marks.rdback wrote: ↑Tue Nov 09, 2021 7:53 am "ball park" hotdogs. Speaking of veggie hotdogs, I've never tried one, but I'm intrigued. This article makes Field Roast Frankfurters sound pretty good, and has a recipe for making a homemade veggie hotdog that is similar; I'd probably have to use a different recipe, though, if I were going to make them (no mace, just as a flavor preference; maybe no pure gluten, although wheat products are fine; no flax seeds):

That actually looks good! I will need to try it out when I have more time. Maybe in the summer. I bookmarked it!Shule wrote: ↑Tue Nov 09, 2021 8:31 pm Speaking of veggie hotdogs, I've never tried one, but I'm intrigued. Re: What do you like on your hotdogs?
I have three foods from my childhood I never willing eat. Hot dogs are one and that includes corndogs. I won't even buy them to use as treats for the dogs... just no.
By the way the other two foods I don't willing eat are bologna and dried lima beans. And yes I have actually gone hungry in order to avoid eating these foods.

Re: What do you like on your hotdogs?
One of my childhood (older child) memories is having a corn dog eating contest at the state fair, with my friends. I won every year, with 13 as the most I had to consume. This would be over the course of about 12 hours at the fair. I would eat the first 2 very quickly. Staying one corn dog ahead of the competition was the key to winning. They were a buck a piece back then. Today it would be multiple trips to the ATM. Every other year, I'll still have one. This year they had what I think they called a "Dilly Dilly" dog. A pickle hollowed out, a hot dog inserted, battered and deep fried. Next year, maybe.

Corn dogs are a hand held Texas toad in the hole.

Re: What do you like on your hotdogs?
I guess it's just mean to spoil the fun with the latest trivia: one hotdog takes 36 minutes off your lifespan.
Compare a cigarette at 11 minutes apiece. Granted it is harder to have just one.
I honestly can't remember the last time I had a hotdog, probably decades ago for sure. We never ate them much.
When faced with a hotdog, would've had as many condiments as available, but mustard a must. No mustard no dog.
