Murphy Daze
I finally broke down and got a new puppy. It has been many years since I have had a dog. My last one was one of those 'once in a lifetime' dogs. He was special and always will be. With COVID-19, I need some company around. Puppies and dogs are hard to find here these days. I wish I lived in CA or TX because they seem to have an abundance of them. My local shelter only had 4 dogs last week. I would gladly take a dog from the shelter but it must be one that has not been allowed to sleep in bed or sit on the couch. None of them fit that requirement. So I started looking for puppies and I found a beautiful litter of Belgium Tervuren's. I went to the bank before going and went in with my mask on to ask for money. Who ever would have thought that I would ever do that? Then I Googled the address that I was given and it came back to a 'Gentleman's Club'. I checked back with the woman that I had been speaking to and yes it was correct. So off I go to the strip club taking my darling daughter with me. I never thought that I would go to a strip club either.
We arrived. There were six gorgeous males and 2 females. I wanted a male since my last dog was one. A female chose my daughter and they bonded quite quickly. She wanted that one but I told her there was a problem that they had bonded and that she did not live in my house and that I needed the dog to bond with me. I had a hard time making up my mind because they were all very nice pups. I finally decided on a male. I gave the woman my money and she started doing the paper work. Well at the last minute my daughter holds up the pup to her cheek and says to me 'how can you leave this one behind". I couldn't. I took the female home with us. We named her Murphy. I also call her Grunt. She is beautiful, smart and a furry ball of fun. She housebroke in 2 days. I am glad to have a dog in my life again. I waited too long. I waited 16 years. Meet Murphy.

Beautiful puppy...how big does that breed get?

The males are about 25" tall and 50 -65 lbs. The females are about 24" and weigh 45 -50 lbs.

Puppyhood IS fun to watch and I am very happy to share this adventure of this young lady growing up. She is not registered but her parent are. Here is a link to the AKC description for those that want to learn more about them. https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/belgian-tervuren/
The first night she slept just fine. She woke at 4:30 am which is fine with me. The following night she was up howling and crying all night. It would stop for about 30 minutes and then start up again. Neither one of us got any sleep. Last night I moved the kennel into my bedroom from the living room. We were exhausted and went to bed at 8:30. She slept until 5:30. I let her out and brought her back to the kennel and went back to bed. Yay, we both slept until 8:30am. We had a much more active day today. She is learning how to play.

Oh, she's absolutely adorable! What a beautiful fuzzy ball of fur. And yes, she even looks smart. And down the road she will probably be a very good protector.

Re: Murphy Daze
Three types of these dogs.
This one was bred for long hair.
Long guard hair and a thick undercoat.
Had a dog with that kind of coat.
Almost impossible to get her skin wet.
Loved the water.
Have fun at dog bath time.
My old dog Boo Boo was trained not to shake off till outside.
Very easy to do.

Re: Murphy Daze
There are actually 4 varieties and they are all considered separate breeds. There is the Belgium Malinois, Belgium Groenendael, Belgium Laekenois and the Belgium Tervuren. They all have different temperaments and coats. These are herding dogs. They are very smart and quite active. The Malinois is known for pacing the house out of restlessness.
Given that this is a puppy and that they do have accidents, she has needed a bath. Her guard hairs have not come in yet so I just have her fluffy undercoat to work with right now. Yes she was hard to wet. I needed to add a bit more shampoo than I had to use on my German Shorthaired Pointers (I hunted in my younger days) or my German Shepherds. Once I got the soap on, it wasn't so hard to get to the skin. I was surprised to see how fast she dried though. With that coat that she has I was expecting it to take forever. It only took about 30 minutes. She surprised me too, she stood like a trooper during the bath. I was expecting her to be fussing and wiggling trying to get out.

What a sweet looking dog! I had a cat named Murphy - who came to me fully feral and left this world being held by the people he loved.

Re: Murphy Daze
Reminds me of a wee German shepherd puppy in my past.
The dog liked us better than it's owners.
For good reason too.

Murphy is amazing me already. She is now 10 weeks old. She knows sit and down by both voice and hand commands. She rings a bell to ask to go out or come in. She loves the snow.
