Re: Worths Idiot Grill.
That grill looks waay bigger than any of those park grills that I ever saw... But gorgeous!
So... have you watched the boys on "Brojects"?
Sure seems like there could be some borrowing of ideas... except... they seem to get a lot more of their materials from the scrap yard...
They did a maple syrup breakfast station http://brojects.tv/projects/ultimate-breakfast-bar/ and an outdoor kitchen on a trailer... You might want to watch those specific projects, if you haven't had the pleasure.

I cant watch them because I have a TV but no connection to TV.
Stopped watching some time ago.
I also like to come up with my own ideas the best I can without harvesting ideas from other people.
I have considered the trailer thing but the first thing I would do is widen the trailer so the pesky fenders and tires would be tucked under like on a wide bed pickup truck.
Right now I am at a halt till tomorrow so I can get more stuff from the metal yard.
The red tubing is a compromise I dont like and I am going to fix that pronto.
It is too thin 1/16 and wont last no time."
Gonna get something better and it isn't what I bought the stuff for anyway.
If a person were to by this project stuff from the chain stores it would break the bank.
Everybody seems to copy the ratchet device to stop the grills from going back down.
I might build something no one has I have seen because most people dont have the stuff to to it.
I do because I have a lathe and a rotary table.
But it is a lot of time and work to do it.
To give an idea of how the rotary table works is, it is set in 360 degree increments, mine goes even farther than that and I have indexing plates to do even more.
But for direct indexing you can just find all the numbers that divide evenly into 360 and pick out the one you want.
Right now I am looking at 15.
360 divided by 15 is 24.
So all you have to do is rotate the table 24 degrees and drill another hole or whatever you want to do.
What I do is get all my numbers on a list and it is easy.
0-24-48-72-96-120-144-168-192-216-240-264-288-312-336-360.
You have completed the circle at 360 giving you 15 divisions and that drill or cutting tool will be right back where it came from at 0.

Re: Worths Idiot Grill.
I don't see any red tubing in any of your photos. Doesn't matter, this is your custom piece, and possibly a prototype, so you might as well do it up right, exactly the way you want it.

Got one grill competed and the other one started.
Here is what I'm using.
You can't see the argon bottle.
The little wheel on the torch is to adjust amperage.

Re: Worths Idiot Grill.
Getting down to the tedious part of the contraption.
Lots of cutting drilling and welding.
Also slapped two of the 1"X2" structural steel together and welded up to make a 4"X4" for the center mast.
Used the same steel for the center and bolted it on.
Drilled wee holes with the drill press took out and used them to mark for the holes in the angle iron and brought back in to make 3/8" holes.
Hand drilled the holes outside.
Darn near a perfect fit only had to use the rat tail file once just a little.
The center mast will get 2 in long 1 1/4 angle welded to it.
Then holes drilled to bolt onto the cross support.
I will drill the holes first of course before I weld the angle iron to the mast.
I will try to get this stuff as square as I can but nothing it completely perfect.
The way I'm doing it I will be able to shim and adjust as needed.
The top of the masts will be 6 feet off the ground.

Everything is all bolted up all nice and tidy.
Very happy with the results and was a big worry for me.
Plus all my kettles and tools were put back up after the pictuer.

Re: Worths Idiot Grill.
Totally too hot this week and the mosquitos are out.
Plus working late every day.
But I did come up with some new ideas.
There is a metal supply place not two miles from where I'm working.
And on the way home too.
They do fabrication too including BBQ grills and such.

There wiilnbe be two axles up top that will have cables attached to raise the grills up and down.
The masts will also serve as tracks for the grills to run on.
Thus the care needed to make and install them.
The axles will have big rings on the end to turn them.
The cable will wrap around the axles.
There will be ratcheting devices to hold the grills up.

Re: Worths Idiot Grill.
Stopped off and bought a cheap portable corded band saw from harbor Freight.
Please forgive me but it was less than 100 bucks compared to the 300 dollars they wanted for one elsewhere.
Used it at the metal yard to cut my order in half so it would fit in the truck.
Worked nicely.
Also got my 4 inch casters there too.
HD and Lowes only had the swivel casters not the other half that doesn't swivel.
Took some thinking on how to make the stand for the thing but I think I have it.
Had a lot of different ideas but settled on one I like.

Re: Worths Idiot Grill.
A few action shots of the stand in the making.
The grill will sit on the stand but not be attached.
Each castor is rated at I think 330 pounds so four of them will hold up over 1,000 pounds, the math says 1,320
Well above what this thing will weigh.
I went with the larger diameter castor wheels to get over rough places and to go with what I calculated the length of each leg to be with this size castor and to get the height of the grill where I wanted it to be, more or less. ]

Re: Worths Idiot Grill.
The cross braces you see in the above pictuer are not what the grill will sit on.
It will be the two long pieces I need to cut and butt weld front and back.
They will be flush with the legs front and back and the front and back part of the grill will sit on them.
Once I figure out how to get this monstrosity on the stand it will allow me to continue to work on the top part.
Not feeling up to standing on a ladder to do that.

Re: Worths Idiot Grill.
What a pain in the rear.
After a catastrophe I got it where I want it.
Using the giant C clamp and bar clamp to tweak it to close tolerance.
Getting all four feet to touch the ground was like wrestling a hog.
Will finish welding up tomorrow exactly where it is or at least so it won't move around on me.

Re: Worths Idiot Grill.
Folks I'm pooped, been up since before the crack of dawn cooking a hearty breakfast and then working all day.
Non stop all day.
Just took a shower as the sun is going down and Smokey my cat is in the house from her daily running around.
She drove be batty wanting in and out as I went in and out following me around.
No problems going to sleep tonight because Smokey and I are both worn out.
And yes the legs will get bracing.
Just enough materials to do that left over from the 1"X2" rectangle steel tubing.
The bottom section will be angle iron that will hold the storage rack that will also be used as a complete grill across the main body of the "Apparatus" AKA The Argentine grill.
The portable band saw was a big win for me as it made me want to cut steel, not dread to cut steel with the cut off wheel on the right angle grinder.
Why I decided to just buy the materials is because on the other forum I was on called "TV" I had a thread started called, "Let's build an Argentine grill".
Some of you all may remember this, 'Maybe not.
My plan was to build it from stuff I found on the job that was scraps.
Well that would have taken me a lifetime and I dont have a lifetime to do this.
Or it would have looked like crap from scraps I found on the job and would have weighed like a ton.
So I decided to just buy the materials instead.
That way I could do what I wanted to do and not compromise.
Engine lathe work and simple wood work coming soon.
