Rosemary seeds

Anyone have some Rosemary seeds they could send. I'll be super happy to send an SASE, and several packs of tomato and or pepper seeds to swap.
Tried to buy a rosemary plant, HD doesn't have any.

rosemary from seed is a long patient process before you get to a plant that you can start using in the kitchen.
fresh seeds will have low germination. seeds take several weeks to sprout. after three months you will have some
very small plants. i have done it in the past.

for right now, check the grocery store in the produce dept. most will have fresh herbs. get a package of rosemary,
and try rooting them in water or moist seed starter. i have a big pot of rosemary growing, and have started several
plants by breaking off a branch, and rooting it in water. they are easy to root. you will get a bigger plant faster.

Thanks Keith, while reading up on it, I saw that all you say is true. I haven't been able to find plants at any of the grocery stores, but it didn't occur to me to buy the sprigs in the herb section of the grocery. I'll try it. Good advice.

All of what Kieth said and more.
You can take a cuttings from a plant or two from landscaping.
If where you live is anything like where I live it is everywhere.
Almost if not all all rosemary is a clone from other plants and there are many types.
Rosemary likes well drained soil and it dies at the thought of nitrogen like what comes in 13-13-13.
Compost from decayed composted plants will make it thrive.
Tuscan blue is the winner where I live in my red clay loam soil and the bees love it.

If you know anyone with a plant, you can air-layer rosemary, far up on a branch, to get a fairly large plant, to start with. Just bend the branch down and bury it, and it will root fairly fast, but you have to let it get a good number of roots, to support the size of the branch. Faster to get a larger plant this way, than the rooting of a sprig, though, as others have said, that's much faster than seeds, and the plants are supposedly better than the seed types.

Marsha - I have cloned Rosemary before and had probably 75% success. I also have a huge Rosemary plant. Do you want me to take some cuttings for you - keep moist and mail to you - or clone them and mail the clone with roots to you? (It did take awhile) I would be happy to do either (or send the cuttings and also clone here just in case) Let me know.

I will start clones tomorrow (Sunday)
I will get the cuttings as close to the PO close time on Monday. You then clone them and if worse case, I can mail my clones.

Barb, let's just do the ones with the roots. The mail has slowed down, and I'm afraid the cuttings will not make it. I can't believe you are doing this wonderful thing for me. Thank you so much!

It is not a big problem to grow rosemary from seed. The picture shows two plants from sowing in April. It is a problem for me to keep them through the winter (dry and warm in the apartment, frost outside). I have seeds, I can send.

Those are some really beautiful plants! What a nice offer, and thank you, but I don't want you to go to the expense, all the way across the pond. The others who have replied here have given me a lot of good alternatives, which I will try first. I might contact you about it in a few months, if their suggestions don't work out, if that's OK.

I have also grown rosemary from seed. Wasn't difficult for me. Sprinkled about 20 seeds and about 5 sprouted? Still have the seed package. Have also grown rosemary from cuttings taken myself and using the sprigs at the grocery store.

Will try to overwinter rosemary again. My plan is to keep a couple pots going inside and to cover my outside plant with a cloche.

I bought some sprigs at the grocery this afternoon, and put them in water. Let's see if they root.

Good luck with the rooting, [mention]Ginger2778[/mention]! If you have any liquid fertilizer, putting a couple drops in the water will speed it up a little - something I do when rooting lemongrass in water like that.

Yesterday, I cut the sprigs off the plant, stripped about 2" from the bottom and put in potting mix. This is how I did it last time, then ignore them and wait.

Same method as pineapple, peel from the bottom.

Are you only stripping the leaves or do you also strip the bark? I strip the leaves and put in a pot with damp soil. I put a ziploc bag over the whole thing so it doesn’t dry out.

I’m trying to get a sage cutting to develop roots. Have it in a jar of water for at least two weeks but no sign of roots. The leaves still look healthy though. Will try putting a couple drops of liquid fertilizer in it.
