Blue heron

Got back from doing a bit of shopping and found one of these on the deck. Unfortunately it spotted me and quickly stepped onto a raised bed before I was able to grab the phone and take its photo

@Whwoz I had to look it up since the heron pictured looked a bit different than our great blue or little blue heron around here.

Yes that's the one. We have always known it as the Blue Heron or Blue Crane.

Anhinga, a.k.a. water turkey. This particular bird hangs out on the bald cypress next to the dock. He went fishing right after he saw me catching a fish.

Saw a Coopers Hawk last week, flew across the yard and perched on a treetop for a few minutes, only the neck moving her head to look around.
Snowshoe hares have been running amock at night in the garden leaving a mess of tracks, then a fox track appeared, and then the night after, a partly eaten carcass of some animal likely one of these rabbits left in the yard. Two days later, ravens arrived. They took it clean away.

I had a vulture fly right close over my head the other day.
Scared the devil out of me.
It was headed to the dumpster.
I felt the air woshig as it went over.

My dad likes to regularly scatter out in the backyard bits of leftover rotisserie chicken for the crows. Dad likes seeing crows. Parents live on six plus acres, I’m their neighbor on one side, the other neighbor doesn’t care. Crows are nice to look at and to hear all their different vocalizations.

One day, dad decided just to put out the whole chicken carcass. That was a mistake, Black Vultures came instead of the crows. Lots of vultures, like 20 or 30. These were pecking hard on the windows of the house and landing on the roof. Black vultures are way more aggressive than Turkey vultures. Black vultures run any Turkey vultures off a carcass although a Turkey vulture might get to the dead animal first.

No more rotisserie chicken carcasses in the yard.

The crows were scared of a chicken carcass I put out.
They would peck and then jump back and look at it.
One time someone threw out a raw hog head in the yard next door and the vultures showed up.

The Snow Geese were all out in the salt grass this morning, grazing right in with the cattle. These birds should be heading north soon. Heard some Sandhill Cranes out there in the grass.

It's was a Bird watchers heaven in Pruedhoe Bay Alaska.
They were everywhere.
Especially the little ugly ducklings that turned into beautiful Swans.

We haven’t had a single Robin this winter. Last winter, we had plenty. Wonder where the Robins went? Robins are migrants/winter visitors only here, no nesting. Hardly any grackles around either. Saw one flock flying by. Our yard gets covered in grackles this time of year, but not this year. This has been the year of the yellow rumped warbler. Those have been in abundance.

It sure is interesting how bird populations vary from year to year. Wonder why, but ????
The squirrel cam on my car caught a bird the other day. Robin by the looks of it, although only pictured from the back.
Not usual to see robins this early, but they may be in the woods laying low and waiting for nesting time. With little snow, there's bound to be food for them early so perhaps they have returned early for that.
